The annual meeting united members for education recognition and new leadership while honoring service strengthening careers and collaboration within Illinois agriculture and preparing the organization for its centennial milestone ahead.

The Illinois Society of Professional Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers held its annual meeting on February 5,2026 in Springfield. Members gathered for a full day focused on education recognition networking and leadership transition for the coming year.

The meeting followed the Society in regular format with professional development sessions updates on programs and time for members to connect and share ideas. The event also provided a setting to recognize contributions to the profession and install new officers.

A major highlight was the presentation of the Society highest honor to an active member. Thomas Wargel AFM principal of Black Prairie Ag Services in Clinton was named to the Membership Hall of Fame. A member since 1991 he was recognized for decades of service leadership and involvement with the chapter.

The honor first awarded in 1980 was reserved for members whose long-term efforts created lasting value for the organization. When called forward, Wargel shared appreciation for his family business and chapter relationships, saying, “We really are a big family, always looking out for how we can help each other grow as professionals,”.

The Society also recognized service to the wider agriculture community. Maria Boerngen PhD of Illinois State University received the Service to Illinois Agriculture Award, the highest recognition for a non-manager or appraiser.

She was cited for her work in agriculture education student support programs and continued involvement with the Society at state and national levels. This award had been presented since 1940 and highlighted partnerships that supported learning leadership and workforce development.

New leadership was installed during the meeting marking a transition for the organization. Laura Enger of Farm Credit Illinois was elected president. A member since 2009 she had previously served in vice president roles before being chosen to lead the chapter. She was joined by officers from private practice academia and the University of Illinois to guide priorities.

Founded in 1928 at the University of Illinois, the Society was the oldest and largest state chapter nationwide. Plans continued toward celebrating the 100th anniversary in 2028 with special activities and reflections on service growth and future opportunities that benefited members of students and partners across the state.
