Onboarding is crucial, and sometimes a little tricky, especially during a pandemic. However, engaging new hires is essential to ensure a smooth transition into your company.

Engaging new hires is essential to ensure a smooth transition into your company. With COVID, the task becomes even more crucial, and perhaps a little bit intimidating. You want to ensure that your new employee has a great start at the company, but you may be limited with what you can do. Fear not, we’ve got some tips to help your new hires feel welcomed and valued.

You even can start before their first day of work. Sending a welcome kit is a nice gesture to show the employee that you care and are already thinking of them. The package can contain company paraphernalia, new business cards, and fun things too! Goodies from a local store based out of your headquarters’ location can be a nice treat.

On day one, you won’t be able to take your new employee around the office and introduce him/her to everyone, so be sure to send out a welcome message to the company as a reminder that a new colleague has started. Encourage other employees to reach out individually to help their new coworker feel welcomed. You could even assign a “Welcome Buddy” to help and connect with your new employee throughout their first week.

Without having a shared office space, it is important to be intentional and create time to check in with them as well. Schedule frequent 1:1’s with your new employee and touch base regularly. Remind them that your virtual office door is always open if they have any questions or need guidance.

Finally, remember to schedule some fun, non-work related activities too! These are the things that would normally happen without a thought in a shared workspace. It could be a virtual lunch, coffee break with a coworker, or even a happy hour.

Regardless of what you choose to do, it is important to be intentional. It can be easy to get wrapped up in work if you are remote, but remember that you and your new employee are part of a team. If you make an effort to connect and get to know them, they will likely feel more engaged and excited about working at your company.
