AFIA congratulates Dr. Marty Makary on his FDA appointment, anticipates collaborative efforts to update U.S. animal feed regulations.

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) has officially welcomed Dr. Marty Makary as the new commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This follows his recent confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

Dr. Makary, a renowned pancreatic surgeon and advocate for evidence-based approaches, steps into a role where his expertise is expected to significantly influence the future of animal feed and pet food regulation in the United States.

AFIA President and CEO Constance Cullman expressed enthusiasm for Dr. Makary's leadership, noting the Association's readiness to work alongside him and the FDA team.

The collaboration aims to propel animal feed regulations into the 21st century, addressing the current limitations U.S. farmers and ranchers face in accessing advanced feed nutrition technologies.

This advancement is seen as crucial for the U.S. to remain competitive on a global scale.

Countries around the world are already implementing innovative feed ingredients that have been shown to improve animal production and welfare. In contrast, the U.S. continues to operate under outdated regulatory frameworks that hinder agricultural competitiveness and innovation.

With over 650 members, the AFIA represents a significant voice in the industry, advocating for regulatory reforms that would allow safer and more effective feed solutions.

Dr. Makary’s appointment is viewed by the AFIA as a pivotal opportunity to focus on scientific and pragmatic approaches to regulation.

The Association looks forward to a productive partnership that not only enhances the safety and nutrition of animal feed but also supports the broader agricultural community in meeting the high standards of production and sustainability required in today’s marketplace.
