The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) proudly announced the appointment of Dr. Jaye L. Hamby as the Director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).
Dr. Hamby brings a wealth of experience and a profound connection to agriculture that positions him well to lead NIFA’s initiatives aimed at advancing agricultural science, innovation, and community outreach.
NIFA, established by the 2008 Farm Bill, plays a crucial role within the USDA’s Research, Education, and Economics mission area.
It directs federal funding to programs that address significant national and global challenges in agriculture, the environment, and communities. This includes overseeing Cooperative Extension Programs and 4-H, enhancing collaboration with land-grant institutions.
Dr. Hamby’s journey in agriculture is deeply rooted in his upbringing on a family cow-calf operation in Tennessee, where he was actively involved in 4-H and FFA. His early experiences laid a foundation for a stellar academic and professional trajectory.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from the University of Tennessee, followed by master’s and doctorate degrees from Oklahoma State University, focusing on agricultural education.
Dr. Hamby has been involved in extensive research specializing in concept testing, product marketing, and market strategies, which has supported agricultural producers and influenced major agribusiness ventures.
He worked with the Tennessee Farmers' Cooperative and led his consulting firm, AGRILEARN™, advising on strategic planning and rebranding for major agricultural retailers and organizations.
Dr. Hamby is expected to leverage his expertise to foster educational programs and innovations that support the next generation of agricultural leaders.
His appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the leadership within the USDA and further empower the agricultural sector through enhanced research capabilities and educational outreach.
