Derek McLean, previously dean of the Agricultural Research Division at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, has been named the next dean of the Quinney College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. He will begin his role on July 1, 2026.
Since January 2023, McLean has led the Agricultural Research Division within UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. There, he has advanced key programs in digital and precision agriculture, bioeconomy, and agricultural security. He also oversees the institute’s research, extension, and education centers, as well as other research sites.
“Derek McLean has been a tremendous leader who has advanced strategic initiatives, cultivated and strengthened partnerships, and moved IANR and our state forward,” said Tiffany Heng-Moss of the University of Nebraska. “On behalf of all of IANR, I wish him the best in the future and look forward to building upon the foundation that he has helped shape.”
McLean is recognized for his focus on combining research, education, and practical agriculture solutions. His work at UNL emphasized the use of new technology and innovative methods to improve farm practices and strengthen the agricultural community.
As the new dean at Utah State, McLean will guide the Quinney College in developing educational programs, expanding research opportunities, and supporting students and faculty in agriculture and natural resources. His leadership is expected to strengthen partnerships within the university and the broader agricultural sector.
An interim dean will be named at UNL in the coming weeks to continue the work McLean has led. His transition marks an important step for both institutions as they focus on advancing agriculture, research, and innovation in the coming years.
Derek McLean’s experience and vision are expected to contribute greatly to Utah State University’s mission in training future agricultural leaders and supporting sustainable practices across the region.
