Annette O’Connor is named dean of Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine and plans to strengthen education, research, and veterinary services through leadership and global professional experience.

Annette O’Connor will become the new dean of the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine on Aug. 2. She brings many years of experience in veterinary medicine, research, teaching, and university leadership. Her career has focused on supporting science, higher education, animal health, and community service.

In her new role, O’Connor plans to strengthen both professional and graduate education programs within the college. She also aims to support research efforts, increase community engagement, and improve services that connect the college with veterinary professionals and communities across Kansas. University leaders believe her experience and leadership skills will help the college continue growing and supporting the veterinary industry.

O’Connor currently works as a professor of epidemiology at Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. During her time there, she has also held several senior leadership positions. Her work in higher education has helped support students, research programs, and veterinary training opportunities.

Before moving into university’s leadership and research, O’Connor worked directly with animals in veterinary practice. She began her career as a beef cattle veterinarian in Australia. Later, she worked in Canada as a dairy veterinarian. These experiences gave her practical knowledge of livestock care, animal health management, and the challenges faced by farmers and ranchers.

Her background combines clinical veterinary practice with teaching and scientific research. This combination gives her a broad understanding of both animal health and veterinary education. Kansas State University officials say this experience will help her guide the college as it prepares future veterinarians and researchers.

O’Connor earned her bachelor’s degree in veterinary science from the University of Sydney in Australia. She later completed a master’s degree in farm animal production at the University of Queensland. She also earned a doctorate in ruminant health from the University of Guelph in Canada. In addition, she is a fellow of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in epidemiology.

The Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine plays an important role in animal health, research, and education. O’Connor’s appointment highlights the university’s continued focus on strong leadership, academic growth, and support for veterinary communities across Kansas and beyond.
