Justin Chlapecka has returned to his roots in northeast Arkansas, accepting a position as assistant professor of agronomy just 35 miles from where he grew up. With a passion for agriculture and strong ties to the region, Chlapecka is now based at the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture’s Northeast Rice Research and Extension Center (NERREC).
His role includes research through the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station and delivering practical recommendations to rice and row crop producers through the Cooperative Extension Service.
Located between Harrisburg and Jonesboro, NERREC operates on 600 acres and focuses on improving rice production while promoting sustainability. Chlapecka conducts field trials and develops research-based advice to help farmers improve efficiency and profitability.
He began his academic journey at Arkansas State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry before shifting to agriculture for his master’s and Ph.D. in agronomy and crop science at the University of Arkansas.
Before pursuing his doctorate, Chlapecka worked as a county extension agent in Poinsett County, following in the footsteps of his father, who also worked in extension. He credits that early experience with setting the foundation for his research career.
Chlapecka worked closely with Professor Jarrod Hardke during his doctoral studies and was guided by Trent Roberts, Endowed Chair of Soil Fertility Research.
Paul DeLaune, department head at the Division of Agriculture, praised Chlapecka for his passion and dedication to both research and community service.
“We are excited to have Dr. Chlapecka as part of our team,” said DeLaune. “I'm sure producers, along with fellow faculty members, are eagerly anticipating the advances in agronomic practices Dr. Chlapecka will bring to the table in years to come.”
