Laboratory Technician

 

Drexel Chemical is a leading manufacturer of quality agricultural products. Drexel is listed in the Top 50 companies in Memphis and has been in business since 1972. We currently operate seven facilities in the Memphis area and are looking to hire a qualified Laboratory Technician.

 

The Lab Technician position assists in the quality control and product development functions by performing a variety of product testing and inspection procedures prior to, during, and after completion of production processes.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Follow written and oral instructions from lab and production management to support the production and quality control of company products.
  • Perform required raw material and product testing, to ensure that quality standards and specifications are met.
  • Help with sampling and analysis of production rework and flush material.
  • Record lab data in appropriate format in spreadsheets and files.
  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, and make minor adjustments to laboratory equipment, such as microscopes, balances, centrifuges, etc.
  • Perform follow-up quality assurance inspection on finished product retains to ensure shelf-life quality is maintained.
  • Perform testing and chemical laboratory tasks, including moisture analysis, sample preparation, bulk density, and sample analysis.
  • Read, interpret, and accurately apply batch sheets, quality control procedures, and specifications for product.
  • Review test results for conformance with specifications and prepare laboratory analysis reports.
  • Interact with production personnel to ensure production integrity of finished goods.
  • Assist with the compliance with the company's environmental program and required permits, by participating in sampling, testing and analysis as needed.
  • Responsible for the filing and retention of various lab documents including Certificate of Analysis, receiving documents, and batch records.
  • Adhere to company recordkeeping procedures regarding inventory control, production, and quality control by completing paperwork and pallet tickets as directed.
  • Communicate with management regarding all accidents or incidents; participate in workplace investigations when requested.
  • Participate in the company's safety program; attend safety training sessions as required; report unsafe working conditions to management, and implement corrective action as instructed.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area; follow all safety precautions for the tasks assigned as it relates to equipment, materials, and personal protective equipment.
  • May be required to assist in other areas to technically support manufacturing operations and related activities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration, electrical current, and chemicals. The employee may be required to work outside for periods of time. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

The employee must occasionally perform the following tasks:

  • Walking for extended periods
  • Standing for extended periods
  • Pushing/pulling
  • Lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds

 

The employee must frequently perform the following tasks:

  • Reaching (extending arms in any direction)

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

 

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

  • This is a full-time position.
  • Hours of work are subject to production requirements and typically exceed 40 hours per week.

 

TRAVEL

  • No travel is expected for this position.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • A 4-year degree in a scientific field is required; chemistry is preferred.
  • Previous laboratory experience is preferred but school can be substituted.
  • Ability to perform intermediate mathematical calculations with strength in formulas.
  • Knowledge of laboratory instruments and testing equipment.
  • MUST have previous Lab tech experience, this is not a position we will train for.
