Milton, ON, October 31, 2019 – Students in elementary and secondary schools will now have a greater opportunity to learn objective, fact-based information about modern agriculture and food, as well as discover future careers in the sector that match their interests thanks to up to $400,000 in funding that will be provided to AgScape by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

This week, Ernie Hardeman, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, announced that the province will partner with AgScape, a charitable organization that delivers curriculum-linked learning materials and programming in classrooms across Ontario, to help youth learn about the agri-food sector and encourage them to pursue exciting agriculture careers.

“Through our investment in AgScape we’re delivering valuable agri-food education to students and educators, right in Ontario classrooms. By increasing awareness and understanding of the importance of our agriculture and food system we are opening doors for the next generation of leaders and achievers to be curious about and consider the vast array of career choices offered by the agri-food sector. As the global demand for food increases, we’ll need the brightest and best working with us as we compete on the world stage,” said Ernie Hardeman, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

“The economic, social, and environmental benefits of having the agricultural story told

often and accurately in Ontario classrooms are beyond measurement. Our programs help students to realize that the agriculture industry is modern, challenging and fast paced and that they can be the new generation of brilliant experts to pioneer bold solutions that address some of our biggest social issues including food security, global warming and human health,” said Glenna Banda, Executive Director, AgScape.

“The funding from the province will allow us to continue our vital role in supporting classroom teachers and inspiring students to be curious, conscious and to think critically as they explore their food choices and realize their potential and the difference that they can make in the agri-food industry.”

Through the government’s support this year, AgScape will:

  • Expand its Teacher Ambassador Program to place more experienced and professional teachers, who are trained to deliver agri-food education, directly in Ontario’s classrooms.

  • Develop curriculum-linked resources to empower Ontario educators to integrate engaging and interactive agriculture and food education into classroom learning.

  • Connect youth to the innovative and thriving world of agriculture and food and ignite their interest in careers in the sector by hosting hands-on learning events that allow students to interact with potential employers in the industry.
