Job Title:  Herdsman/Feedlot Manager

Reports to:  Chief Executive Officer/Owner

Operations Location: Steele, ND

 

Primary role:  Oversee daily operations of Feeding, Grazing, Herd Health, Calving, and management of staff involved in livestock activities.1500 head cow-calf operation, 2000 head Feedlot backgroung operation of raised livestock with some custom feedling. 

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Identify sick animals and treat as necessary.
  • Management of whole herd health Cow/calf and Feedlot operations
  • Manage and assist in vaccination programs.
  • Manage and distribute daily feed rations
  • Pen maintenance (Scraping pens, manure removal, snow removal)
  • Ability to sort cattle in calm manner
  • Assist in artificial breeding programs and synchronization
  • Assist in breeding decisions for market opportunities  
  • Assist in transporting cattle to pastures and market
  • Repair and maintain equipment and structures
  • Maintain and build fence
  • Maintain high standards of animal welfare
  • Efficient and productive personnel management
  • Assist in hay and forage supply activities
  • Maintain feeding records
  • Maintain Livestock records, EID tag, Genomic testing data.  
  • Figure livestock Breakeven and budgets
  • Schedule Feeding and Processing Duties

Qualifications – Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required to perform this job with excellence

Education:  No specific education required. Animal Science degree a plus.

Interpersonal skills:  Work effectively in a staff support position with owner, and managers.  Possess ability to maintain satisfactory relationships with others, and a good overall understanding of appropriate human relations behaviors.

Licenses/Certificates:   Drivers License CDL license not required but a plus.

Familiarity with agriculture:  Must have knowledge and experience with livestock enterprises

Experience:  2-3 years of actual experience working with livestock.

Managerial Accounting: Have an general accounting understanding able to make decisions in best financial interest

Process Improvement:  Knowledge and experience in SOP development, and techniques for improving business efficiency.

Adaptability:  ability to adapt to changes, delays or unexpected events in the work environment; ability to manage competing demands and prioritize tasks; ability to change approach or method to best fit the situation.

Attendance and Punctuality: Ability to consistently be at work and on time.

Dependability:  ability to follow instructions, both in written and verbal format; ability to respond to management direction; ability to complete tasks on time or notify the appropriate person with an alternate plan when necessary.

Work EnvironmentJob will involve working outdoors, with travel throughout business environment interacting with owner, staff, field personnel.  Employees will be exposed to dust, odors, noise, and equipment typical for a diverse livestock, commodity and specialty crop operation.

Work Schedule:  Job Requires to work weekends and long hours at certain times during the season.
