Job Description:

 

Our client, a leader in the production and export of high value seafood products, is searching for a Cost Accountant to join their team in their Caraquet, NB plant.

 

Reporting to the Head office, the Cost Accountant will be responsible for gathering, managing and analyzing cost data, ensuring that the plant’s financial operations are running efficiently, and providing valuable insights to help drive profitability and operational improvements. This position is based in the processing plant and plays a key role in supporting the management team to make informed decisions on production costs, inventory management, and overall financial performance.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare and maintain cost accounting records, including production costs, inventory valuation, and variance analysis.
  • Monitor daily production activities and assess direct and indirect costs.
  • Analyze raw material, labor, and overhead costs, and provide detailed reports to management and head office regarding cost trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual cost audits, reconciling cost accounts, and ensuring accuracy in financial reports.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and forecast, ensuring that cost assumptions are accurate and aligned with operational goals.
  • Coordinate and support inventory management by ensuring that inventory counts are accurate and that costs related to raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods are appropriately allocated.
  • Work closely with the production team to understand processes and cost drivers, providing guidance on cost-saving initiatives and efficiency improvements.
  • Prepare financial reports and communicate findings to senior leadership, highlighting potential risks and opportunities related to cost control.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and industry-specific financial practices.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of internal controls and cost policies to ensure proper cost allocation and data integrity.

 

DESIRED PROFILE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in cost accounting, preferably within a manufacturing or food processing environment.
  • Strong understanding of cost accounting principles, financial analysis, and inventory management.
  • Proficiency Sage accounting software and ERP systems.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy in financial reporting.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and support management in decision-making.
  • Knowledge of seafood processing operations and supply chain management.
