Our client, a leader in the bakery ingredients space, is searching for a Senior Regulatory Specialist. The Senior Regulatory Specialist ensures that all finished products meet legal, regulatory, and certification requirements across both domestic and international markets. This role provides strategic oversight of regulatory compliance programs, leads complex risk assessments, and drives continuous improvement initiatives within the Regulatory Department. This is an on site role in the Toronto area.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides strategic oversight of regulatory compliance programs to ensure alignment with national and international food regulations and certifications (e.g., FDA, CFIA, EU, Codex).
  • Leads and performs advanced regulatory assessments for new product development, reformulations, and global commercialization efforts.
  • Oversees the creation and maintenance of regulatory documentation and product specifications.
  • Leads regulatory reviews and approvals for new raw materials and finished goods, including labelling compliance, ingredient declarations, and certification claims (Kosher, Halal, etc.).
  • Oversees the continuous improvement of regulatory systems, workflows, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for greater efficiency, compliance, and traceability.
  • Collaborates closely with cross-functional teams (R&D, Sales, QC, Operations, Supply Chain) to proactively identify regulatory risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Supports Jr. Regulatory Specialists and QC Technicians in regulatory best practices and daily QC testing support
  • Manages high-level customer requests, audits, and technical documentation packages for domestic and export customers.
  • Serves as the regulatory lead in commercialization meetings and provides weekly risk-based updates to the leadership team.
  • Oversees and improves the company’s global supplier approval program:
    • Leads supplier risk assessments and annual supplier reviews.
    • Oversees investigations and RCA/CAPA processes for complex supplier issues.
    • Ensures compliance with evolving global supply chain transparency regulations.
    • Conducts supplier audits for non GFSI suppliers
  • Plays a leadership role in the internal audit and Food Safety teams, contributing to third-party audit readiness and certification maintenance (BRCGS, Kosher, Halal, GFCP).
  • Subject Matter Expert in electronic systems such as Genesis, LabelView, SharePoint, Dynamics CRM, Business Central, and others related to regulatory and quality data.
  • Supports and drives digital transformation initiatives in the Regulatory and QA space (e.g., automation, data integration, dashboards).
  • Acts as a key support and escalation point for QC functions, including training, troubleshooting, and process validation for critical quality activities.
  • Approves production schedules and ensures compliance of allergen and certification testing programs.
  • Champions food safety and quality culture by actively supporting programs related to HACCP, GMPs, authenticity, traceability, and customer-specific requirements.
  • Leads or participates in cross-functional projects related to innovation, compliance, and operational excellence.

 

DESIRED PROFILE:

  • Degree in Chemistry, Food Science, Microbiology or a related discipline; additional training in international food regulations is a strong asset.
  • Minimum 5+ years of regulatory affairs experience, preferably in a food manufacturing environment with international exposure.
  • Strong knowledge of international regulatory frameworks and emerging compliance trends.
  • Exceptional leadership, project management, and organizational skills.
  • High attention to detail with a strong sense of ownership and urgency.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate technical information to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Comfortable managing multiple high-priority projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Applies a proactive, risk-based approach to regulatory decision-making.
  • Anticipates changes in global regulations and adjusts systems and processes accordingly.
  • Drives key regulatory initiatives to support business growth and compliance goals.
  • Acts as a mentor and thought leader within the Quality team.
  • Promotes a strong culture of compliance, integrity, and continuous improvement.
  • Builds strong relationships across teams to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Maintains the highest level of ethical conduct in regulatory matters.
