Currently, networking is as important as having the right credentials in the workforce. As the world shifts to a more online and work from home presence, here are a few insights into networking virtually versus in person.

While online networking has become more of the norm, this article will discuss how to navigate the world of online networking for those just getting into it.

Online Networking:

The ability to meet and network online has been a tremendous benefit to job seekers and employers. There is an ease of use, and it is highly convenient. Being able to reach out and connect with multiple people from the comfort of your own home or office is one of the largest advantages of online networking. Being able to meet lots of people, including those that are located globally, makes online networking an important tool for this day and age. However, online networking does come with some caveats, so here are some tips to help you out!

  1. Take initiative to reach out and message people. Since everyone is online, employers may get multiple messages. It’s always nice to make the first step and get yourself on their radar!
  2. Update your socials. When we think online networking, many people instantly think of social media and apps such as LinkedIn. Make sure your socials are up to date and show who you are as a professional!
  3. Keep it simple. Although it is easy to send a few messages over an app or website, sometimes messages can be lost, misinterpreted, or skimmed over. To stand out, highlight your job titles, professional experience and what you’re looking for. Keep the details for the interview!

In-Person Networking

While online networking is convenient and more accessible than in-person, there is still a huge value in networking face to face.

Networking in-person allows for:

  • A stronger connection and allows for both parties to read body language, which lets more of your personality shine through. Sarcasm and jokes; concepts that can be lost in instant messaging can help build personal relationships when face to face.
  •  A good handshake, eye contact and your personality can help you stand out in a large pool of candidates. Take the effort to dress professionally, look someone in the eye and don’t forget to smile.

Take advantage of social downtime (coffee breaks, intermissions, periods after talks) to meet and connect with fellow industry leaders and employers. The biggest takeaway from in-person networking is to attend as many conferences and events as possible so that you can meet a larger pool of employers. This is different compared to online networking, where you can meet hundreds of people from all over the world at one event.
