Building your digital resume may sound like a complicated process if you have never done it before, but I can assure you it is not. Having an online or digital resume drives you to create resume content that will stand out more than other applicants.

Applying online has become the new norm for most workplaces. This means it requires you to build your resume online. Building your digital resume may sound like a complicated process if you have never done it before, but I can assure you it is not. Having an online or digital resume drives you to create resume content that will stand out more than other applicants.

There are plenty of ways you can make your online resume unique to you. But it is essential to know what the employer is looking for. Make sure your resume is organized and easy to read. Employers dislike spending time trying to decipher your resume; they may toss it aside if it takes too long to scan for important content.

Keep it short with concise section headings. List the most recent dates first, proceeding with the remaining dates in reverse chronological order. With your resume being online, search words are essential. What that means is when you are writing about yourself, utilize terms/words that are within the job description of the position you are applying for. Such as skills they are looking for but ensuring they are skills that you actually have.

It is always good to start with the basics of a standard resume, including:

  • Full name
  • Address
  • Contact information
  • Skills
  • Experience
  • Education/Certificates

Now to the fun part. With resumes being digital, you can be a bit more creative with a digital portfolio, so you stand out. A great way to do this is to build yourself a website about yourself (a digital portfolio). There are plenty of free easy to use website-building tools you can utilize to do this such as Wix.com, Squarespace, WordPress and Weebly. You can include an “about you” page with a picture, your contact information (including social media accounts), your resume and pieces of work that you have completed and/or photos of your work within your website. This is an excellent way to show potential employers your skills and the job you can do. Make sure that it is relevant to the position you are applying for and well assembled. Providing a brief description to give the piece of work some context is also important to include. Building yourself a portfolio offers employers an opportunity to learn a bit about you and to see what you are capable of before your interview. It is an excellent chance to shine and stand out.

Essentially, a resume is a commercial about you and your work skills. It is the moment to show off your talents and prove that you would be the ideal candidate for the position. Use building an online resume to your advantage and make yourself stand out to the employer. Remember, you are the only one who knows yourself the best!  Now take the time in an online resume to make sure you convey how good you are for that position!
