Ready to apply for a new job? These quick tips will help your application process go smoother from start to end.

  1. Match your cover letter and resume to the job posting

Customize your resume and cover letter to include the same language that is used in the job posting. Yes, you should always include a cover letter. Be sure to include the job title and where you found the posting in your cover letter. Your cover letter should briefly tell them why you are a match for their posting. We can do this by using some of the same details that are in their job description in your cover letter. Do not lie; if you do not have the skills or qualifications that are listed, do not include them in your cover letter or resume.

Your resume should also have the same wording that is used in the job qualifications or skills listed. You can alter your current list of qualifications or previous work experience to match what they have listed. Word for word lists is not recommended, but a couple of times it is ok. Often you can only state project coordinator skills, retail service experience or specialized licensing a certain way, but you can use statements that are relevant from a posting like these:

  • Coordinate and execute commercial seed field trials and collect in season data as required
  • Provide support to Agronomist in collaboration with the sales team within your territory
  • Support in providing superior customer service to growers and retailers

Your cover letter is usually a separate file upload when you are submitting your application online. With an email application, it can also be the body of the text of the email. Remember to include this letter in PDF form as an attachment to an email application; other people may receive a copy of your attachments but are not forwarded your original email.

When you match your language to the company’s they may feel that you are already a part of their team as you speak their ‘language.’

  1.  Keep a digital copy of the job description and make notes

When you are applying, always save a copy of the job posting so you can easily find it later. You can download a copy, print screen, or copy and paste the information into a word document. Add notes to this file, for example, questions that you may have or names of people you know who work or worked there. Make sure you include in your records the date you applied to the position. When you keep a record of application dates and the date you get a call for the interview, you can track how long companies may take to respond to applications. Sometimes it can be four to six weeks before you hear about an interview. By keeping records of this information, you can reduce any stress or anxious feelings you may develop resulting from not hearing back within the period you hope to. When you get that call for the interview, you can quickly go back to your saved copy of the job description and any notes you may have to prepare.

  1. Research the website for at least 20 min

When you are applying for a position, it is important to review the company website. You will get an understanding of the company’s mission, values, and core business products. This information will enable you to be confident that this company is where you want to be working. This information will be good to know when that first call comes to pre-screen you for your interview. Also, when you get an interview, it is important that you are familiar with the information that is posted on their website. This knowledge will show them you have taken the time to review their company and have a high understanding of what their business is. This thorough review may also provide you with some great questions to ask during the interview stage.

Remember that employers understand that applying for work can be a stressful time for the job seeker. They are comfortable and understanding with people who are nervous about the interview.
