Technology is advancing every day, and artificial intelligence can complete tasks we never dreamed it could a decade ago. But with the rapid development of machine learning should we be worried about a robot uprising? Are these bots coming to steal our jobs? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Artificial intelligence is an application of technology designed to perform tasks that typically require a level of human intelligence to complete. AI functions by imitating human behaviour to complete these tasks. You might be using or interacting with AI already without knowing it. Voice to text programs, Siri, Alexa, spell checkers and even spam filters on your email inbox are all forms of AI.

That being said, Siri and Alexa are not the job stealing bots’ people are usually worried about. The type of AI that most often raises concerns is generative AI, which generates image, video, or text in response to a prompt it is given. Until this point, AI was being used for mundane and monotonous tasks as a way of saving time, but as the technology grows, has begun to expand. Now it can take over more complex tasks in the fields of tech, marketing, design, and many others. Making it possible to develop lines of code, write articles or create graphics all with the push of a button.

From an initial business perspective, AI is a great way to save time and work more efficiently. It can be a great tool to help with brainstorming, inspiration, and overall idea generation; helping to develop imagery for those without design knowledge or to create a list of article topics for those struggling to find ideas. AI can be beneficial in saving a lot of time and providing new ideas in the early stages of projects.

However, there have been numerous concerns associated with the use of AI; namely those relating to algorithms, data, and privacy. The source of the data used to train AI is largely unknown, which raises concerns about data privacy and copyright infringement. In addition, because we don’t truly know where the data is coming from, who’s to say the AI isn’t going to produce content that supports societal bias? These are all important considerations when deciding whether or not to implement generative AI into your daily practices, and perhaps shows us not to take what the AI produces and run. Until these systems are perfected, the content it creates will always need a human touch to inspect for any errors.

Now back to our original question, is there actually a chance that the robots can steal our jobs? Technological advances are always going to open new career possibilities while also functioning as a catalyst for outdated jobs to be phased out. There’s no clear answer about whether your specific job as a marketer, writer, coder, or what have you will be taken over by machines. Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that you can provide real human experience to a role, and that is irreplaceable. No robot can steal that value from you.
