The need for skilled employees has grown and will continue to grow..

Nearly all public high school students across the country have the opportunity to take CTE (Career Technical Education) classes. These classes teach technical skills, training, and occupational knowledge to prepare students for high demand careers. Exploring career options inside and outside of the classroom helps students find their interests that can help with direction for after school choices. The ability to explore careers during the class day allows students to stay involved in the after school interests such as sports, clubs, and employment.

Beyond the classroom, there are opportunities for:

  • Internships
  • Apprenticeships
  • Networking

The Department of Instruction states “Students in CTE programs and their parents are three times as likely to report they are "very satisfied" with their high school education experience compared to prospective CTE students and their parents”.

The need for skilled employees has grown and will continue to grow. In the 2020 Agribusiness Job Report conducted by AgCareers.com, Employers identified the primary reason for recruiting difficulty was applicants lacked required skills. The Department of Instruction states that 6 of the 10 hardest-to-fill positions are in Technical Fields or require a CTE Background. Allowing students to gain exposure to these programs directly connects them with employer needs after high school or post-secondary school.

It is never too early for students to be exposed to career options or for them to have access to opportunities in finding where their passion is fueled.  Agriculture/Food/Natural resources is one career cluster (or tract) in the CTE program. This teaches students how human life is sustained around the world. Students as early as 6th grade are taught career fundamentals and they can build on these essential skills well into adulthood.
