Overview
A policy analyst studies how current and proposed laws, government policies and regulations affect individuals, organizations and the community. They perform detailed research to determine the effectiveness of policy and suggest improvements to provide direction for organizations. Policy analysts typically specialize in a specific area such as education, agriculture, environment, labor, energy or regional development.

What education and training is required?
Most employers require a minimum of master’s degree in public policy, agricultural economics, political science, education, agribusiness or a field related to the organization’s industry. For example, a master’s degree in education would benefit someone wishing to work in the field of educational policy.

The following high school courses are recommended: agricultural education, writing, business, government, economics and computer skills.
Where can I work?
Policy analysts work in a wide range of organizations depending on their area of specialization, including municipal, state and federal agencies; private industry (food, agriculture, environmental, etc.); educational institutions; private research firms, animal pharmaceuticals or non-profit organizations. Many positions require specific knowledge and experience.
