Position: Field Scientist in Plant Breeding and Protection

 

Responsibilities:

The Canadian Tobacco Research Foundation (CTRF) has an on position to contribute to all aspects of an established applied and basic research program focused on flue-cured tobacco production in Southwestern Ontario.

 

The successful candidate will jointly collaborate with our research team to design and conduct experiments aimed at improving plant traits through advanced breeding techniques and plant protection activities.

 

In the area of Plant breeding, the candidate will assist in developing and implementing breeding strategies to enhance crop performance and resilience, conducting hands-on work in both field and laboratory settings, and maintaining breeding materials and databases.

 

For Plant protection, the candidate will contribute to the Plant Diagnostic Laboratory at the CTRF, monitor plant health, and assist in the management of disease resistance in breeding populations. It is the goal that this position will be integrated within both programs to achieve common breeding and plant protection objectives. It is expected that the candidate will stay current with the latest advancements in plant breeding and plant protection and participate in relevant conferences and workshops. A detailed list of expected job duties can be supplied as requested.

 

Requirements:

• A degree in plant Protection, Plant Breeding, Agronomy, or a related field.

• Demonstrated experience in plant breeding and Protection techniques, including crossing, selection, disease diagnosis.

• Knowledge in molecular biology techniques, such as DNA extraction, PCR, and markerassisted selection.

• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams.

• Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and work independently in a dynamic research environment.

The applicant must be eligible to work in Canada.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous experience working in academic or industry settings focused on Plant Breeding or Plant Protection.

• Proficient in diagnosing plant diseases through laboratory and field assessments; potential to develop and deliver a related training package.

• Conduct field trials and laboratory experiments to evaluate pest control methods and assist in developing promising crop varieties aligned with this approach.

• Strong understanding of agricultural practices and challenges, particularly those related to crop improvement.
