YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In this position, you will leverage your leadership expertise as a member of Bayer's global Small Molecules team to drive innovation and discover novel solutions for Crop Protection (CP).  You will have unique opportunities to collaborate with our global R&D CP Discovery teams as well as initiate and lead collaborations with our external technology providers. Here, you will showcase your abilities to creatively design and analyze experiments, develop solutions and partner directly with our diverse teams of chemists, data scientists, biologists, and biochemists to fuel our CP portfolio for weed, disease, and pest control.

 

The primary responsibilities of this role, Senior Scientist Structural Biologist, are to: 

 

  • Lead and drive projects with end-to-end ownership of deliverables in protein structure elucidation, either for transmembrane proteins via Cryo-EM or soluble proteins with X-ray crystallography, to enable specific molecule design;
  • Utilize state-of-the-art biochemistry techniques for protein expression and purification with a focus on membrane proteins;
  • Work as an enthusiastic researcher in a dynamic and scientifically exciting global network covering Agrochemical Discovery and Pharmaceuticals, assessing and validating novel molecular targets for CP;
  • Join an empowered team closely interacting with broad scientific disciplines including chemists, biochemists, biologists and data scientists, in a global R&D organization;
  • Design and develop biochemical assays to characterize and validate novel modes of action;
  • Drive a digital way of working and in-depth analysis and assessment of results, especially for modelling and docking of protein-ligand interactions;
  • Generate, analyze, and interpret relevant data and results to coordinate and evaluate the scientific progression of projects in rapid decision and action cycles;
  • Develop yourself, your team members and peers via continuous learning, constructive feedback and guidance towards flexible delivery of relevant data to understand target engagement and project progress;
  • Source, coordinate and steer external collaborations and resources in all fields of structural biology-related work areas for continuous innovation;
  • Communicate effectively with project stakeholders and leadership to convey an understanding of project progress, gaps, and alignment with primary and contingency plans;
  • Generate documentation to secure Intellectual Property (IP) for all projects.

 

WHO YOU ARE

 

Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

 

Required Qualifications: 

 

  • M.S. degree;
  • Expert knowledge in structural biology / molecular modelling;
  • Proficiency in laboratory techniques including protein expression, protein purification, assay development;
  • Experience in working with membrane proteins is a strong advantage;
  • Passionate about working in multidisciplinary teams;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills as well as intercultural knowledge and understanding;
  • Eager to learn, able to solve problems and structure complex tasks;
  • Ability to inspire and motivate colleagues with a profound sense of accountability;
  • Ability to be bold and embrace change.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Ph.D. with 5+ years; OR
  • M.S. degree with 10-12 years of relevant industrial experience in Biochemistry or Molecular Biology.

Domestic relocation may be offered for this role.

 

Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $114,940.80 to $172,411.20. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc. This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant's location, market data/ranges, an applicant's skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
