Production Research Assistant

Bayer CropScience is seeking a highly motivated Seed Production Research Assistant to deliver operational aspects of indoor protected culture plant breeding operations for its Canola R&D program. This is a unique opportunity to work with leading edge technology and talented R&D professionals that deliver the best Canola products.

 

There are 2 openings available, both full-time, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the 580 Berry St. facility.  One of the positions are permanent and another is a 12 month term position.

 

What you will do:

  • Manage the day-to-day organization and maintenance of growth room projects including, but not limited to seeding, tissue sampling, transplanting, self & cross pollinating, harvesting & threshing
  • Manage general plant care and maintenance of growth rooms
  • Identify and report the issues arise with facility or plants including need to control pests or diseases in growth rooms
  • Use of herbicides or other chemical applications under supervision and following the company’s policies and procedures
  • Efficiently & effectively carryout all detailed record keeping, chemical spraying and other technical objectives
  • Maintain tidiness & orderliness within the workplace
  • Supervise and train temporary employees as required
  • Work closely with other research staff to coordinate and implement process improvements
  • Participate in task-related data collection, document creation and process review for job-related activities
  • Comply and maintain Health Safety and Environment (HSE), Quality Management System (QMS) and Compliance programs at Bayer.
  • Assist in other projects & performs other duties as required

 

 Who you are:

  • Degree or diploma in agricultural/biological science or related field or equivalent
  • Ability to manage physical nature of watering, plant care, growth room maintenance
  • Willingness to work in varied weather conditions (cool or warm)
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs
  • Able to work overtime during week and weekends when sporadically required
  • Possess strong ability to work accurately and pay attention to detail
  • Outstanding organizational skills and ability to prioritize daily tasks
  • Highly motivated, results oriented, with the ability to work with people individually or in a team to gain commitment to achieve results 
  • Comfortable with change and ability to learn new procedures
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear, concise and actionable manner
  • Strong computer literacy, with experience using Excel, Word, PowerPoint

DESIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous experience in Canola and/or plant breeding
  • Knowledge of crop production or growth room production methodologies
  • Experience in Hybrid crop research & development.
  • Ability and willingness to obtain pesticide applicator license
