Product Design Principal Scientist

Product Design Scientist is a key influencer of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for leveraging genomic, phenomic, and environmental data to design improved germplasm. They are expected to lead the delivery of enhanced seed products, data insights, and prescriptions to the Product Development pipeline through utilization of accelerated breeding schemes and innovations in genomics, quantitative genetics, computational biology, and functional genomics.

This is a permanent, home-based position based out of either Saskatoon, SK; Winnipeg,MN; Calgary, AB or Guelph, ON.

What you will do:

  • Provides leadership to coordinate the technical strategy to design improved cohorts of germplasm that are aligned with Product Concept targets from initial crossing through the handoff to Product Development
  • Leverages model outputsto achieve measurable improvement of quantitative traits under selection
  • Acts as a key stakeholder to drivestrong collaborative relationships with field testing, data science, engineering, molecular breeding, logistics, trait integration, Product Development, Market Development, and Commercial organizations to deliver a robust product pipeline
  • Ensures meaningful knowledge and data transfer during transition points per crop cycle timelines
  • Proactively identifies key areas of opportunity for new technology implementation and/or process improvement, while positively contributing to a collaborative, innovative, and design-centric culture
  • Integrates and leads projects/initiatives with partner teams and across world regions (NA, LATAM, EMEA, APAC) to guide development and implementation of Precision Breeding
  • Attracts and develops talent and serves as a mentor for peers or colleagues in key areas of expertise that support personal development
  • Supports the Health Safety & Environment, Compliance, Business Conduct and Human Rights policies and culture

Who you are:

  • PhD degree in Genetics (human, animal or plant) Plant Breeding, Animal Breeding, Quantitative Genetics, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Data Science or other relevant scientific field with minimum of 6 years of relevant experience or MS degree with 10+ years of experience in breeding programs, genetics or applied data science projects
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in cross-functional and cross-cultural teams to achieve common goals
  • Demonstrated experience leading and influencing activities of cross-functional teams without direct reporting relationships
  • Ability to lead and influence key stakeholders through challenges and opportunities; facilitates solutions
  • Results orientation with demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects/priorities simultaneously
  • Experience in analysis of large biological data sets, quantitative genetics, biostatistics, and functional genomics
  • Experience coding experience in R, Python or similar software
  • Strong collaboration ability demonstrated through building cross-functional partnershipsand influencing others to drive results and solve business problems
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex problems

The base salary range for this role is between $110,000 and $160,000. This compensation includes components such as base salary, vacation pay, public holiday pay, potential estimated overtime pay and paid statutory leaves of absence. Additional benefits may include insured benefits such as health care, vision, dental, disability, and contributory retirement savings plans, etc.

This role also provides the opportunity to earn additional performance-based compensation. If performance-based compensation is earned, the total compensation package may provide an opportunity to earn a Total Direct Compensation (TDC) range of $134,900 to $184,900. This TDC would include base salary and may also include items like bonuses (short-term and long-term incentives) and sales incentives. The estimated TDC range estimates performance-based compensation earned at 100% of target; however actual amounts may fluctuate below or above the TDC range based on company and/or individual performance.

This salary range is an estimate and may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, market data and the applicant's skills, prior relevant experience, job-related knowledge, specific degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
