Refinery Superintendent - Des Moines, IA

Under the direction of the Plant Manager, the Refinery Superintendent is the leader responsible for the safety, regulatory compliance, operation, colleague development and leadership, and performance of the Des Moines Refinery. This position leads a team of salaried and hourly colleagues and is responsible to lead directly and through others by providing direction, leadership, motivation, communication, training, coaching and discipline as needed and within site guidelines for all colleagues in their area. It is critical for the sites success that the Plant Superintendent can successfully collaborate with peers on site and beyond to deliver safe results.

The site operates 365 days a year, and this position has accountability to support the site across all shifts.

Job Duties

As a member of the Site Leadership team, the Refinery Superintendent is responsible for taking an active role and will also coach others in site programs including human safety, feed & food safety, quality, environmental standards, and Performance Excellence (CI) to ensure their department is supporting the goals of the Complex and other departments.
  • Leads the Operation of the Plant to maintain personnel and process safety:
    • Maintains an environment in which personal safety is the top priority
    • Ensures the team works safe and the department maintains compliance of all health and safety regulations
    • Ensures the operation of the site is in compliance with all regulatory permits, laws, regulations and best practices
    • Aligns department goals with goals of the Complex and communicates the direction and priorities to the department leveraging a structured management system.
    • Coordinates operations of the plant to insure adherence to established product, environmental, safety, housekeeping and quality guidelines established by the company
    • Demonstrates ADM Core Values in decision making and actions.
    • Collaborates with work groups across the organization to develop a strategic vision for the department to be implemented through the department deployment plan.
    • Supports Quality and the Food Safety Management Systems, and may serve as a member of the Food Safety Team
    • Acts as a key stakeholder to the plant leadership team.
  • Models the way of the Performance Excellence Journey:
    • Leads and Coaches the team to leverage continuous improvement tools and achieve department and plant KPI's.
    • Conducts Daily Review and Response and works closely with the Plant Manager and steering team to adjust, adapt and escalate situations as needed.
    • Ensures that deviations from KPIs and incidents are driven to Root Cause elimination by team
    • Demonstrate commitment to improving safety, processes and efficiency of the plant by delivering the department deployment plan in both 'what' (metrics) and 'how' (means).
    • Work in collaboration with Centers of Excellence to improve technology and reliability of the operations.
  • Is an Effective Communicator:
    • Demonstrates strong communication skills in both verbal and written communication.
    • Interprets and ensures consistent application of organizational policies and procedures
    • Performs Colleague Performance Reviews and meets with Colleagues on a regular basis to review goals and individual development plans
    • Collaborates with HR to manage performance of department Colleagues
    • Takes on additional roles and responsibilities to continually develop self-and/or other team members.
Job Requirements:
  • Five (5) or more years of experience leading / supervising teams in continuous manufacturing industry required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (or equivalent experience) plus 7 years of supervisory experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in oilseeds (soybean, cottonseed, canola, sunflower, peanut, canola) with experience in crush, extraction and refining processes in a food manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated self-starter with the ability and initiative to work independently, self-monitor with minimal oversight.
  • Results driven focus to provide support and achieve the goals established by leadership.
  • The ability to engage with and motivate direct reports and demonstrate leadership qualities to all plant personnel.
  • Demonstrated decision-making capability and effective problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organization skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Demonstratable and strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office and other programs.
  • Must be able to work in all types of climates both inside and outside including extreme hot and cold temperatures, noisy environments, at heights, and in dusty environments, all of which require use of Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Ability to climb stairs, access ladders, catwalks and elevated working platforms.
  • Must be able sit and stand for long periods of time, work at heights, some lifting, bending, kneeling and be respirator qualified.
