Plant Superintendent - Decatur, IL


Under the direction of the West Plant Manager, the Plant Superintendent is responsible for leading the safety, regulatory compliance, operation, colleague development, and performance of the Decatur West Plant. The Decatur West Plant is a soybean and corn oil crushing and refining facility, including lecithin de-oiling and phospholipid processing. West Plant is a union facility. This position leads a team of approximately 360 full-time colleagues in hourly and salaried roles.

The Plant Superintendent is responsible for leading, directly and through others, by providing direction, leadership, motivation, communication, training, coaching, and discipline as needed and within site guidelines for all colleagues in their area. The Plant Superintendent's ability to successfully communicate and collaborate with peers cross-functionally on site and beyond to deliver safe results is critical to the site's success.

Job Duties

As a member of the Site Leadership team, the Plant Superintendent plays an active role in coaching and mentoring others in programs including safety, feed and food safety, quality, environmental standards, and Performance Excellence (CI) to ensure their department is supporting the goals of the Complex and other individual departments.
  • Leads the Operation of the Plant to maintain personnel and process safety:
    • Maintains an environment in which personal safety is the top priority
    • Ensures the team works safely and the department maintains compliance with all health and safety regulations
    • Ensures the operations of the site are in full compliance with regulatory standards, permits, laws, and best practices
    • Aligns department goals with the goals of the complex and communicates the direction and priorities to the department, leveraging a structured management system.
    • Coordinates operation of the plant to ensure adherence to established product, environmental, safety, housekeeping & quality guidelines set by the company
    • Demonstrates ADM Core Values in decision making and actions.
    • Collaborates with work groups across the organization to develop and implement a strategic vision for the department through the department deployment plan.
    • Supports Quality and the Food Safety Management Systems, and may be a member of the Food Safety Team
    • Acts as a key stakeholder to the plant leadership team.
  • Models the way of the Performance Excellence Journey:
    • Leads and coaches the team to leverage continuous improvement tools to achieve department and plant KPI's.
    • Conducts a daily review and response, and works closely with the Complex manager and steering team to adjust, adapt, and escalate actions to situations as needed.
    • Ensures deviations from KPIs and incidents are driven through the Root Cause elimination process.
    • Demonstrates commitment to improving safety, processes and efficiency by delivering the department deployment plan in 'what' (metrics) and 'how' (means).
    • Work in collaboration with Centers of Excellence to improve technology and reliability in operations.
    • Is an Effective Communicator:
      • Demonstrates strong communication skills in both face-to-face and written communication.
      • Interprets and ensures consistent application of organizational policies and procedures
      • Performs Colleague Performance Reviews and meets with Colleagues regularly to review goals and individual development plans
    • Collaborates with HR to manage the performance of department Colleagues
    • Takes on additional roles and responsibilities to continually develop self and/or other teams
Job Requirements:
  • Prior experience leading/supervising people.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (or equivalent experience) and 7 years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated self-starter and able to self-monitor with minimal oversight.
  • Results-driven to provide support to achieve the goals established by leadership.
  • An ability to motivate direct reports and demonstrate leadership qualities to all plant personnel.
  • Demonstrated decision-making ability and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organization skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Computer skills and capability with Microsoft Products
  • Applicant must be able to work in all types of climates, both inside and out, including extreme hot and cold temperatures, noisy environments, heights, and dusty environments, all of which require the use of Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Ability to climb stairs, access ladders, catwalks, and elevated working platforms across all hours of shift working time. This role also requires lifting, sitting, and standing for long periods, working at heights, bending, kneeling, and being respirator qualified.
  • Applicants must be willing to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Experience that would be beneficial, but not required: experience in extraction, grain handling at scale, oilseed processing, or manufacturing
