Glycerin Department Superintendent - Decatur, IL

This is a salary position reporting to the Glycols Production Manager.

Job Description:

This position is responsible for leading the day to day activities as well as short/long-term planning for the Glycerin Department. The Superintendent will champion performance excellence throughout the department to develop personnel, manage chemical and mechanical processes, and oversee the successful implementation of improvement projects. As a key member of site leadership, the Superintendent will establish and own the key performance indicators for their department and will be responsible for tracking and understanding department costs, yields, quality, process performance, and mentoring process engineers, employees and colleagues.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our employees, customers, and visitors is a top priority, which includes enforcement of all company and location requirements for personal safety, process safety, environmental compliance, and quality assurance.
  • Identify improvement opportunities and take ownership of the Focused Improvement efforts in their area.
  • Issue guidance and establish a proper review and response process to enable and equip employees and successfully manage the department to meet daily, weekly, and monthly targets.
  • Analyze existing processes for cost savings, reliability, and performance improvement opportunities.
  • Interact with research, maintenance, controls, process, and quality personnel in planning for and the development/implementation of process improvements.
  • Advocate for resources to support the department and ensure success.
  • Ensure effective training and mentoring of department operations staff.
  • Availability to support 24/7 plant operations.
  • Provide directions and priorities to all direct reports.
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • B.S. in Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of plant operations, managerial experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated problem solving.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary to accurately relay results and performance information to key stakeholders and drive success in operations.
  • Ability to manage intradepartmental relationships across company job functions including but not limited to engineers, plant personnel, commercial stakeholders, and research personnel.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks is critical to effectively managing activities and improvements in the department.
  • A general knowledge of plant and process operations, regulatory requirements, and a financial understanding of the manufacturing costs related to equipment and processes.
  • Effective interaction with multiple employees and managers to prioritize demands.
  • Continuous improvement utilizing independent judgment to effectively solve problems.
  • Proactive participation in safety, environmental, and quality activities to ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the development of process engineers, direct reports and colleagues through training and mentoring activities.
