SUMMARY:

Responsible for evaluating raw materials and packaging components, developing, prototyping, and quoting new formulations/packages as well as modifying existing formulations/packages to meet customer needs and/or improve manufacturing efficiencies. Responsible for Sales/Customer/Internal support regarding raw materials, formulas, prototypes, & packaging finished goods.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Attendance is key to performing the job.
  • Collaborates with other technical staff and Sales/Customers and Marketing/Creative Development & Design leadership in the development of innovative products.
  • Assists with the acquisition, maintenance, testing, comparison, and utilization of information on current and potential raw materials.
  • Formulates powder, capsule, tablet, and other dietary supplement dosage forms which can include the use of active raw materials such as: enzymes, probiotics/prebiotics/postbiotics, vitamins, minerals, botanical, or other isolated active ingredient.
  • Assists and/or develop prototype samples for internal testing or customer requests, including but not limited to physical tests on said prototypes.
  • Plan, coordinate, request, and conduct testing research as needed on raw materials and finished dosage forms.
  • Assists in scientific, medical, and biochemical literature research to support product development efforts.
  • Assists in technical research utilizing institutional libraries as well as online services to collect, analyze and evaluate published literature.
  • Technical support (internal and external) related to raw materials, product formulations, & other job duties.
  • Participates in the development of specifications for raw materials and finished products in cooperation with Technical Services, Quality Control, Laboratory, and Manufacturing staff.
  • Maintains information in a variety of databases including, but not limited to those containing information related to raw materials and formulation information.
  • Expertly and proficiently execute advanced analytical techniques involving state-of-the-art laboratory instrumentation.
  • Assists in writing technical reports, protocols, scientific presentations, and scientific communications / articles for publication.
  • Write and initiate stability protocols as negotiated with customer/Sales, and coordinate with various groups as required for protocol completion.
  • Participates in the research and development of new blends, processes and/or finished products that may require working with powders, capsules, tablets, R&D equipment, or manufacturing equipment in production facility.
  • Prepares product rationales and provides other technical product support utilizing company information files and individual research.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
OFFICE ATTIRE:
  • Basic office attire is business casual in the office setting.
  • When in the lab, development, or production areas, dress code requires pants, closed-toe shoes, and appropriate PPE (provided) based on the lab function are required.
  • Business professional attire may be required during times of on-site special visitor/leadership meetings.
EQUIPMENT USED:
  • Basic office equipment such as computer terminal and printer, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, telephone.
  • Proficiency with office productivity software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.) and databases is preferred.
  • Familiarity with basic analytical laboratory equipment preferred.
  • Production or R&D style equipment: various blending, encapsulation, tableting, coating, packaging, warehousing and R&D testing equipment.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) with a major in biology, botany, chemistry, nutrition, food science, or related mathematical or similar technical field, or the equivalent of education and experience.
  • Experience in the supplement industry is preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific/technical journals, professional journals, marketing reports, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write technical reports, business correspondence and procedural documents.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from company personnel, technical professionals, and customers.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as algebra, probability, and statistical inference.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete and abstract variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to handle a variety of input furnished in written, oral, mathematical, or diagram form with abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Must be a self-starter with good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Must have the ability to work well with others, including fellow employees and customers.
  • Must be able to work independently.
