Color Scientist (Erlanger, KY)

This is a full time exempt position.

Position Summary

The color scientist will work closely with other departments to develop commercial products in food, beverage and pet food using colors from internal sources. This role will have the opportunity to build new color blends to support customer needs, run color analytical data for existing and new colors and source new colors when needed.

Job Responsibilities

  • Have a basic understanding of natural and artificial colors and be able to apply that knowledge to the food, beverage and pet food industry
  • Directs and trains lab technicians in execution of work. May also train additional Scientists
  • Follows basic GMP, ISO Procedures, GLP, Safety, Lab Notebooks and/or other electronic documentation tools
  • Development of cost effective, stable colors.
  • Completes relevant stability testing, costing, documentation and commercialization.
  • Will have direct customer interaction
  • Trouble-shoots any issues regarding formulations/manufacturing procedures, etc.
  • Makes recommendations and implements them based on trouble-shooting research
  • Reduce formula costs on existing products, completing vital stability and commercialization efforts
  • Evaluates and recommends new sources of raw materials and laboratory tools
  • Updates and maintains related documentation pertaining to products, processes and customers.
  • May accompany account executives on sales calls as technical support
  • Provides information for and proof- reads demo sheets and required certificates prior to shipping with samples/finished products for accuracy
  • Coordination of sample shipments with shipping department in accordance to customer/salesperson guidelines
  • Completes work on time and accurately
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and continues to acquire color and color interaction knowledge
  • Performs multiple tasks daily, with the flexibility of re-arranging daily workload to accommodate higher priority needs
  • Must remain aware of industry trends
  • Develop prototypes using color that meets customer needs
  • Develop color blends that meet customer needs
  • Complete Analytical testing on colors
  • Support manufacturing of colors in production setting
  • Attend customer calls / presentations as needed

Job Requirements

  • BS, or higher, degree in Food Science or related field; with 5 - 10 years' experience in the chemistry of color and how to formulate color products, but industry related a must
  • Great verbal and written communication skills
  • Appropriate customer interaction skills
  • Holds high regard for company safety values/practices
  • Has accuracy and precision in their daily work
  • Analytical, problem solving and experimental design skills
  • Digital literacy; Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Able to manage time well in a fast paced environment
  • Social skills, ability to work in a team/cross-functional environment
