Chemical Process Technician - Decatur, IL FDME This is an hourly level position.
Position Summary: ADM is building a new Pilot plant for the production of FDME from fructose at its Development Products facility in Decatur, IL. As a result, we are seeking a knowledgeable person familiar with food and chemical processing operations for the commissioning and day to day operational activities of equipment at this facility. The successful candidate will be expected to become a qualified operator within three months and will be expected to monitor and control process parameters to achieve desired product specifications by analyzing system controls, log sheets, and lab reports. In addition, there is an expectation to perform a variety of jobs, tasks and duties such as housekeeping, painting, oiling, greasing, lubrication, sample retrieval, and a variety of duties as required. This plant will produce pilot quantities of FDME for applications testing utilizing various production processes and operational functions, including material handling, reactors, distillation, and other separations.
Primary responsibility will be to ensure successful daily operation of the ADM FDME pilot facility through monitoring and adjustment of production equipment with both manual and computerized controls
Operate the equipment in the plant while performing various tasks such as material handling, mixing batches, collecting and entering samples, and basic housekeeping
Must have the ability to work and communicate effectively with other operators, supervisors, maintenance, and contractor personnel
Must be able to safely perform quality work with minimal supervision to achieve ADM FDME pilot plant goals. These include:
Proactively participate in plant safety and quality programs, taking ownership for personal safety, as well as the safety of others through a commitment to safe behaviors, a safe work environment, and adherence to safety policies and procedures
Identify and troubleshoot equipment operating problems and upsets
Monitor all equipment and systems, making adjustments in order to safely produce quality products
Assist in developing and complying with SOP's and assist in training/coaching of personnel in the SOP's
Assist in developing and complying with safety, environmental, quality, and production procedures/policies
Manage and control electric and instrument materials
Successfully complete all continuous education requirements including, but not limited to, safety and environmental rules and regulations, process equipment, controls, and technologies
Will work in a plant environment with the expectation to initiate work based on general instructions
Physical requirements include ability to climb stairs, lifting up to 50 lbs, prolonged periods of standing and sitting, computer work, meeting deadlines, providing calculated information, working in confined spaces and from heights, bending, kneeling, working adjusted hours, and working as instructed.
Physical qualification to wear a respirator is required
Prompt attendance is required
Basic understanding of scientific disciplines (math, chemistry, physics, reasoning, and mechanics)
Excellent mechanical, troubleshooting, reasoning and problem solving aptitude
Demonstrated ability to utilize and interpret information from charts and graphs
Ability to read and understand technical drawings including P&ID's and flow charts
Prompt and consistent self-starter with ability to manage deadlines while juggling multiple tasks
Strong interpersonal skills are necessary to effectively interact with multiple employees, management personnel, and other stakeholders
Interpersonal skills, including handling conflict; explaining problems and potential corrective actions for processes in a fair, honest, and direct way
Must be able to work in a team environment, maintain a positive and respectful attitude, and be able to perform tasks in a timely manner
The candidate must be able to utilize independent judgment to solve problems, have excellent organizational skills, and strive for continuous improvement
Ability and willingness to travel as required for training
Basic computer knowledge
Must be qualified or willing to obtain qualification to operate a fork truck
Basic understanding of chemical system, mechanical systems, and continuous process operations
Knowledge of industrial production plant equipment (pumps, valves, meters) and their interaction with process controls (Distributed Controls Systems)
Familiarity with evaporation, distillation, reactors, and continuous production processes is a plus
Must be able to work multiple shifts and have flexibility to work overtime when needed
