Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Grain Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the operations of our high-volume grain handling and rail loading facility in Wright, Kansas, as well as managing our grain locations in Spearville and Wilroads. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of all grain receiving, storage, conditioning, and outbound logistics, with a strong emphasis on railcar loading and coordination with Class I railroads. The manager leads a team of operations personnel, oversees maintenance and capital improvements, and ensures optimal grain quality and customer satisfaction.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Facility & Rail Operations:

  • Oversee all aspects of grain handling including receiving, drying, aeration, blending, and storage.
  • Manage the scheduling, coordination, and execution of unit train loading operations (e.g., 110+ car shuttle trains).
  • Ensure compliance with railroad requirements, including track inspection, car placement, and loading timelines.
  • Monitor grain flow and inventory using automated systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of grain movement, shrink, and quality metrics.
  • Coordinate with merchandising and logistics teams to align rail shipments with market demand and contract obligations.
  • Oversee preventative maintenance programs for grain handling equipment, rail infrastructure, and automation systems.
  • Manage maintenance budgets and ensure timely procurement of parts and services

 Safety & Compliance:

  • Enforce strict adherence to OSHA, FRA, EPA, and company safety standards.
  • Lead facility safety programs, including confined space entry, lockout/tagout, fall protection, and emergency response.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, drills, and training sessions.
  • Ensure environmental compliance related to dust control, grain fumigation, and waste management.

Personnel Management:

  • Recruit, train, and supervise a team of Operators, Office personnel, and Seasonal staff.
  • Develop shift schedules to support operations during peak seasons.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and support career development.

Customer & Stakeholder Relations:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for producers, and railroad representatives.
  • Ensure timely and accurate communication regarding grain deliveries, quality issues, and shipment schedules.
  • Represent the facility in community and industry meetings as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Agribusiness, or related field (preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in grain operations, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Experience in managing rail logistics and train loading operations is required.
  • Strong understanding of grain quality management, inventory control, and safety regulations.
  • Proficiency with grain accounting and automation systems (e.g., CompuWeigh).
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and respond to emergencies during peak seasons.

Physical Requirements:

                    While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; taste or smell; stand; walk; sit and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and /or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move over 100 pounds. The employee may frequently need to climb ladders (may range from 20' to 180') and stairs.Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.Employee must understand and implement all related safety policies, procedures and programs for prevention and protection while performing job duties in various work environments.
