AgCareers.com awarded their third annual U.S. Feed Your Future Scholarship to Gabryele Carter, a University of Kentucky student. Carter is a Junior from Delaware studying Agricultural Economics.
AgCareers.com created the Feed Your Future $1,000 Scholarship to financially assist a post-secondary student studying agriculture or intending to pursue a career in agriculture. AgCareers.com is committed to Feeding the World with Talent by supporting education and career opportunities in agriculture and food.
Carter’s passion for the agricultural industry and commitment to community service is evident through her volunteer work with underrepresented farmers and involvement in non-profit organizations. “I have seen the power of advocacy and education in transforming lives,” noted Carter. “As a minority in agriculture, I understand the importance of representation and support in an industry where diversity is often lacking,” added Carter.
She plans to use her agricultural economics education and talents to help rural and minority communities, empowering them with financial literacy skills and credit access to foster agricultural equity.
The application process involved students responding to essay questions, including, “How are you going to do your part in feeding the world with your talent?”
Carter wrote, “I am committed to using my skills in agricultural economics and community advocacy to help bridge the gap between underserved communities and the resources they need for healthier lives,” including access to fresh food and nutrition information for impoverished communities.
“Food deserts, where fresh, affordable, and nutritious food is hard to find, are a growing problem in low-income, rural, and urban areas. Many families in these regions rely on convenience stores and fast food, leading to poor nutrition and long-term health challenges,” stated Carter. “I want to help change this by connecting local farmers to these communities, creating a direct path for fresh produce to reach those who need it most. This approach not only helps combat food deserts but also supports local agriculture, which is often overlooked in food-insecure regions,” added Carter.
