Role Purpose

    The purpose of the Entomology Scientist is to develop and implement a robust and efficient plant insect phenotyping program that supports development and placement of insect/pest tolerant products. This Entomologist will support primarily corn and soybean development, discovery, native trait, and GM trait projects through effective delivery of: 1 assay development and improvement, 2 quantitative phenotyping results, 3 entomology expertise on project teams, and 4 large-scale insectary management  To build a diverse & effective Entomology network that supports Syngenta Trait Delivery strategy. This network will likely bridge across Syngenta Product Development, Trait Development, R&D, Automation & Engineering, Agronomy, Crop Protection, as well as universities and third-party research organizations. 

Accountabilities

    Lead, guide, and conduct Entomology phenotyping efforts of Corn and Soybean. Lead and guide large scale insectary production to deliver on-time, quality insects. Serve as an entomology technical expert on project and functional teams to enable generation of quality phenotypic insect data, results, project plans, and other information necessary to deliver insect control products. Develop, refine, and execute efficient efficacy studies in the field, greenhouse, growth rooms, and laboratory; collaborate to improve efficiency continuously.  Analyze data, prepare, and present summaries to stakeholders. Source and manage third-party testing including locating and contracting trial sites and cooperators, plus guiding their activities to meet Syngenta’s objectives. Effectively train and guide Research Associates, Associate Scientists, and temporary technical personnel within Entomology functional group, as required. Manage all activities in accordance with all Syngenta HSE, GM, and QMS policies and Federal USDA and EPA and State regulations.

 

Requirements

    PhD in Entomology with applied experience or  a MS in Entomology with 5+ years of applied entomology experience in host-plant-resistance and insectary management. Knowledge and applied experience in experimental design and statistics. Knowledge in plant sciences and development. Hands-on experience and capabilities in basic Entomology techniques including insect collection, propagation, corn and soy crop insect phenotyping techniques, and insect assay development and optimization. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage, motivate, and lead self and team members to deliver on objectives Excellent experimental design, planning, execution, and analysis skills, and experience / expertise with common statistical analyses and data visualization platforms. Successful collaboration & networking with others: ability to learn & share effectively in a diverse team environment, and to leverage skills and knowledge therein. Applicants need to be flexible to move within the US, most likely starting in Slater IA, but possibly / probably moving within 1-2 years, and 2 they need to be able to be physically present and work at Slater. Applicants need to be flexible for travel requiring overnight stays, several nights at a time, within the US, and infrequent international travel.

Preferred Requirements

    Applied experience and knowledge in Entomology techniques including large-scale insect production, corn and soy crop insect phenotyping/screening techniques, plant-insect assay development/optimization, and insect pathology. Knowledge and experience in developing / using digital phenotyping approaches is highly desirable. OPEX, Quality Management, and Project Management skills & experience are highly desirable. 3+ years of hands-on experience developing, refining, and conducting successful crop insect phenotyping assays, especially on soybean and corn, in field, greenhouse, and laboratory.

Physical demands of the essential functions:

    Work environment varies from greenhouse and field work to typical office and meeting environments Exposure to high and low temperatures in field, greenhouse, or seed store. Capable of standing and sitting for long periods of time.  Capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.            Capable of bending, lifting, squatting for several hours at a time to observe and evaluate plant insect responses. Capable of working longer hours during time-critical periods of growing season and during travel. Exposure to potential allergens such as dust, pollen, fungal spores, and chemical pesticide residues in the field or greenhouse.
