Martha Mamo Honored with UNL Academic Leadership Award

Martha Mamo earned the 2026 James O’Hanlon Academic Leader Award for advancing agricultural research, curriculum innovation, and academic leadership at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

Martha Mamo, head of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Department of Agronomy and Horticulture and the John E. Weaver Professor of Soil Science, has received the 2026 James O’Hanlon Academic Leader Award. The honor recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, collaboration, and service in advancing academic excellence.

Mamo joined the department in 2000 and became department head in 2019. During her tenure, she has helped strengthen research programs, promote innovation, and expand connections between the university and Nebraska’s agricultural industry.

She has led several initiatives aimed at long-term growth and success. These efforts include developing two five-year strategic plans and overseeing the 2023 Academic Program Review to align departmental priorities with university and industry goals.

Mamo has also guided important curriculum improvements. Under her leadership, undergraduate programs were updated into the Plant and Landscapes degree program, while the department helped introduce the Digital Agriculture minor to meet evolving workforce demands.

In addition to her administrative role, Mamo is recognized as a respected researcher, educator, and mentor. She actively supports leadership development among faculty, staff, and students while fostering a culture of collaboration and professional growth.

Her influence has also contributed to the department’s research success. Since 2018, research recognition and funding opportunities have increased significantly, with the department securing support from agencies such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Science Foundation, and Department of Energy.

The award highlights Mamo’s significant contributions to academic leadership, research advancement, and agricultural innovation. Her efforts continue to strengthen the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s impact on agriculture and higher education.
