ABOUT THE POSITION: Warehouse Audit, a program within the Commodity Inspection Division of the Washington State Department of Agriculture, licenses and regulates public grain storage warehouse operators and grain dealers for the protection of
producers and depositors. WSDA conducts routine audits to determine if these licensees are in compliance with state laws.
 
Reporting directly to the Grain Warehouse Examiner-Senior this position plans and performs detailed examination of public warehouses and grain dealers that receive, store, condition, ship, and/or buy commodities. The Grain Warehouse Examiner will determine if they can adequately cover storage and contractual obligations for that commodity per the requirements of Chapter 22.09 RCW, Agricultural Commodities, and Chapter 16-23 7 WAC, Commodity Storage Warehouses and Grain Dealers, for the protection of producers and depositors.
 
This position requires extensive travel.  Most travel is same day but there are multiple times per year where overnight stays are required.

Duties
  • Performs a physical inventory of commodities stored in steel tanks, cribbed bins, ground piles and/or flat houses; determines the amount of commodity in that storage unit within a 1% tolerance of that commodity and examine the commodity for insects, contamination and moisture. 
  • Identifies problems to include but not limited to: facility food security, cleanliness of warehouses, out-of-condition commodities and issues with a notice of correction.
  • Audits of company records; including consisting of extensive examination of storage and contractual accounts and outstanding and unused warehouse receipts. 
  • Verifies commodities received from scale tickets, purchase reports and cancelled checks to ensure proper accounts from scale tickets, purchase reports and cancelled checks to ensure proper accounts have been credited, and that charges for receiving storage, processing and load-out charges are applied equally per the filed tariff.
  • Verifies that commodities in store are fully insured; confirms current market value and total amount of filed stock insurance provides adequate coverage.
  • Performs special year-end inventory to assist the company’s accountant with on-site inventory evaluation for the company’s financial statement. 
  • Assist in the continual development of procedures and policies of the WHA program by way of recommendations and suggestions. 
  • Assists in the annual statewide Karnal Bunt Survey, a specialty survey within WSDA. 
  • 50% Travel
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

Qualifications Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in agronomy, business administration, agricultural economics, or related field with additional credits of accounting courses.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license
  • Ability to meet working conditions upon hire date.
  • Note: Work includes exposure to chemical fumigants, must be capable of working at heights exceeding 100 feet. 

Desired:
  • Two years of accounting work experience with exposure to audit functions. 
  • Prior commodity warehousing experience.
