Position Summary: Provides technical support to the Citrus Breeder. Assists with R & D projects for AC Genetics (Citrus) which will include citrus breeding and evaluation. Updates variety archives for the Citrus Variety Development Program.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees irrigation, weeding, plant care in the greenhouses and field trials.
  • Will be mentored in citrus breeding techniques and evaluation.
  • Prepares pollen and seed parents for annual spring pollination campaign.
  • Conducts annual spring pollination of designated parents.
  • Harvests fruit, extracts and sows seeds.
  • Takes care of young citrus seedlings.
  • Supports the R & D Program as directed by the Citrus Breeder
  • Coordinates with Production team on experiment planning, resource utilization and scheduling.
  • Write and/or present periodic reports to the Director as well as monthly status reports.
  • Organizes, coordinates and assigns projects to assistants during the pollination campaign.
  • May be assigned other tasks as workload dictates

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily, including all important aspects of the job – whether performed daily, weekly, monthly, or annually; and any duty that occurs at irregular intervals.   • Care of citrus plants in the greenhouses and field trials.
  • Responsible for basic experimental design, trial execution, data interpretation and result summary.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and evaluation of plant material for performance with respect to economically important traits of interest.
  • Instructs and trains staff in job requirements, safety rules and use of equipment.
  • Responsible to communicate with Variety Development consultants and Variety Managers as directed by Director of Genetics.
  • May be assigned other tasks as workload dictates

 

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk or stand for long periods of time. Must be able to work outside under varied weather conditions, on uneven surfaces, and on hillsides. The employee must be able to work in greenhouse environment at high temperatures, as well as high humidity. May be required to lift items of up to 50 pounds.
     

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English and ability to communicate basic orchard and greenhouse tasks in Spanish is preferred
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Must be a team leader with the ability to work well and communicate effectively with fellow employees and management. Have leadership qualities and be acquainted with employee supervision techniques.
  • Ability to prioritize in order to efficiently perform all duties

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Greenhouse Production experience and training
  • Basic organization skills
  • Ability to communicate with, coordinate & give instruction.
  • Ability to do computer work on MSWord, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.
  • Ability to understand and follow chronological plans.
  • “Bug checking” skills with basic knowledge of citrus pests.
