Position Summary:
The Senior Buyer is responsible for developing and executing origination and trading strategies for corn, wheat, and soybeans, ensuring alignment with internal Wenger Feeds milling needs and external Nutrify trading and marketing initiatives. This role is critical in building and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders, including producers, commercials, transportation providers and other market participants. By effectively leveraging these relationships, the Senior Buyer will maximize returns and establish a strong competitive advantage in the marketplace. This role requires a strategic mindset, excellent negotiation skills, and a deep understanding of market dynamics to drive success and growth for the organization.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Maintain deep knowledge of regional supply and demand factors and market dynamics that drive price and impact logistics into the Wenger Feeds network.
Manage ingredient contracting and trading programs to ensure sufficient supply coverage and seamless delivery execution across all mills.
Procure grain efficiently from area producers/commercials, balancing basis, quality, volume, and strategic goals.
Build and maintain long-term relationships with targeted customers, aligning procurement solutions with their marketing needs to maximize mutual value.
Adhere to Nutrify's grain contracting protocols and comply with National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) Trade and Arbitration Rules.
Communicate proactively with customers through direct and digital channels (e.g., text, email, social media) and collaborate with the Wenger team to drive grain origination and logistics execution.
Monitor and report on producer trends, crop conditions, and marketing strategies to support internal strategy development and decision-making.
Leverage the company's CRM system to manage customer relationships and leverage insights into their operations and preferences.
Support the development and execution of team strategies, business plans, and marketing initiatives within the Nutrify grain procurement team.
Partner with Feed Mill Managers on joint farm visits to initiate and strengthen customer relationships.
Provide leadership and development to direct reports and other merchandisers on the broader Wenger team.
Who you are:
Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or equivalent from two-year college or technical school and related experience and/or training.
1 5 + years ' experience in buying and trading grain
Agriculture background required with knowledge of production agriculture; Strong customer focus; Strong communication and listening skills.
Experience with CME and related activities preferred
Ability to relate to needs of agri-business people.
Ability to negotiate favorable contracts.
Ability to develop mutual trust and satisfaction with vendors and customers.
Ability to respect market directions and handle the pressure of market positions.
Ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form .
Proficient in Microsoft Office (M.S. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
Must have a valid driver's license with the ability to operate a motor vehicle.
