What your day looks like:
The Industrial Refrigeration Technician is an integral part of our Engineering & Maintenance team and is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of Freon (HFC/HFO) refrigeration and HVAC systems throughout our food processing facility. This position supports food safety, product quality, and continuous production operations through preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, system optimization, and regulatory compliance.
May be responsible for all or part of the following duties and responsibilities as determined by the Maintenance Manager:
Refrigeration System Operations & Maintenance
Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on industrial Freon refrigeration systems, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, receivers, expansion devices, and associated controls.
Diagnose and repair refrigeration system issues involving refrigerant leaks, pressure abnormalities, oil management concerns, electrical faults, and control failures.
Recover, evacuate, recharge, and properly handle refrigerants in accordance with EPA Section 608 regulations.
Maintain accurate refrigerant usage, recovery, and service logs.
Install, commission, modify, and repair Freon refrigeration and HVAC systems, including piping, valves, controls, and safety devices.
Conduct routine inspections, performance testing, and efficiency evaluations to ensure optimal system operation.
Recommend equipment upgrades, system modifications, and energy-saving improvements.
Controls, Electrical & Process Support
Troubleshoot and maintain electrical, PLC, and control systems interfacing with refrigeration equipment.
Support ammonia refrigeration technicians as needed on shared or hybrid systems while serving as the primary Freon refrigeration subject matter expert.
Coordinate with outside contractors and service providers for specialized refrigeration projects or repairs.
Assist with training maintenance personnel on refrigeration fundamentals, safe refrigerant handling practices, and system operation.
Compliance, Safety & Documentation
Ensure all work complies with USDA, FDA, EPA, OSHA, and company food safety and sanitation requirements.
Maintain detailed maintenance records, work orders, equipment history, and inventory levels of refrigeration components and refrigerants.
Participate in the on-call rotation and respond to refrigeration emergencies that may affect production, food safety, or product integrity.
Complete required training in a timely manner.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Manager.
Minimum of five (5) years of hands-on experience servicing industrial or commercial Freon (HFC/HFO) refrigeration systems
Strong knowledge of reciprocating, screw, and scroll compressors
Proficient in brazing, soldering, pipefitting, evacuation, and refrigerant charging procedures
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and mechanical drawings
Experience troubleshooting refrigeration controls, electrical systems, and PLC interfaces
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
Excellent attention to detail and commitment to safety
Effective communication and documentation skills
Experience in food processing, cold storage, or other hygienic manufacturing environments preferred
Experience working with both Freon and ammonia refrigeration systems preferred
Familiarity with energy efficiency initiatives and refrigerant phase-down regulations (AIM Act) preferred
Technical school training, apprenticeship, or related refrigeration education preferred
Valid driver's license and ability to respond to after-hours service calls
Physical & Environmental Requirements
Ability to work in cold environments, including coolers and freezers
Ability to work at heights, climb ladders, and enter confined spaces
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. regularly
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
Ability to safely work around refrigerants, oils, industrial equipment, and elevated noise levels
Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
Ability to work days, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call schedules as business needs require

2nd and 3rd shift positions are eligible for a $2/hour shift differential.
Weekend shift positions are eligible for a $3/hour shift differential.
