Job Description:

We are currently seeking a Staff Formulation Engineer for the Product Technology and Engineering team in Greensboro, NC. As a Staff Formulation Engineer, you will provide technical expertise and process optimization strategies in a pilot plant for both existing and novel manufacturing technologies to maximize quality, capacity, and efficiency outcomes during scale-up, and after launch, of newly formulated chemical products to commercial manufacture. You will work with cross-functional teams involved in process safety, continuous improvement, process simulation, and scale-up.

You will generate the process definition in Crop Protection (CP) capital projects, including process plant design and equipment evaluation and specification. Progress projects to increase manufacturing capacity, improve quality, and/or reduce manufacturing costs at CP sites or the bulk supply chain. Provide advice for the creation and implementation of development programs and procedures within the formulation engineering processing area. You may take a lead role in department teams or initiatives and help drive the overall success of departmental operations i.e., safety, efficiency, and productivity initiatives. You will be recognized as a technical resource for other engineers in North America.

This position will be onsite in Greensboro, NC, and may provide a relocation package. Up to 20% travel may be required.

Duties:

  • Support all Safety and Compliance requirements, policies, and SOPs; lead by example.
  • Deliver the scale-up of formulation processes from lab to full-scale manufacturing ensuring process safety, health, and environmental subjects are fully anticipated.
  • Support technology transfer teams for inter-regional transfer or re-siting of products as the technical lead on product establishment teams, and a member of the technical start-up team for new processes and equipment at Syngenta manufacturing sites or tollers.
  • Design pilot plant trials and full-scale manufacturing trials - write operating procedures, train the operating team, provide technical supervision, document the outcomes, identify next steps, and share best practices.
  • Apply formulation engineering processing knowledge to identify solutions that improve capacity, quality, and cost efficiency at manufacturing sites and/or in the bulk supply chain and be a member of the project teams that implement these solutions.
  • Progress projects to seek out and introduce innovative manufacturing technologies for implementation in the pilot plant, production sites, or supply chain.
  • Progress evaluation and trials novel processing technologies and techniques, then work with site manufacturing teams to introduce them into full-scale manufacture in Crop Protection.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Chemical Engineering or Materials Science preferred) with 5+ years of proven experience in a technical position related to chemical formulation process development or formulation manufacturing
    • Or, a Master's degree with 3+ years of experience
    • Or, a PhD with 2+ years of experience
  • Manufacturing process engineering design experience/knowledge in at least 3 of these unit operations:  particle size reduction with both solid & liquid dispersions, mixing & milling operations, separation & crystallization in formulations, filtration & polymerization, heating & cooling effects on formulation stability, spray drying, extrusion & drying, liquid & solid discharge, etc.
  • Strong continuous improvement, process risk assessment, and HSE excellence mindset.
  • Experience working in cross-functional organizations, navigating a dynamic and uncertain environment ensuring effective and focused project delivery (on time and within budget).
  • Proven ability to prioritize activities and manage multiple requests from different stakeholders.
  • Understanding of the end-to-end processes for product development, formulation processing scale-up, and lifecycle management.

Preferred:

  • Proven manufacturing scale-up experience from a pilot plant environment is strongly preferred
  • Direct experience conducting processing studies for agrochemical or pharmaceutical products
  • Lean Six Sigma Belt certification
  • Process modeling knowledge
