data into meaningful information and ultimately helps to grow more food with
fewer resources.

You will help transform
digital agriculture by:

  • Provides
    thought Leadership in the Data Science/Machine Learning domains through the
    dissemination of ideas and results throughout the Syngenta organizations by
    turning agronomic data into products.
  • The
    output will primarily support furthering the understanding and translation of
    the GxExM (Genome x Environment x Management) framework through advanced
    scientific and analytical techniques.
  • Drives the establishment
    of a data science research protocol for the CADS team, including the
    assembly of a testing and evaluation computational environment, an
    internal method/code review process, and a technology transfer schema for
    turning data into usable products.
  • Converts
    data derived from disparate systems and platforms into scalable products
    and services which positively impact Syngentas financial performance, and
    further strengthens the relationship between Syngenta and our customers.
  • Protects
    the integrity and FTO of Syngenta by ensuring, in close cooperation with
    Legal & Taxes and other expert functions, Syngentas full compliance
    with the applicable legal and regulatory framework as well as Syngentas
    own legal and ethical, HSE, Corporate security, Risk Management and
    Corporate Governance standards.
  • Provides
    direction and guidance to each of the two/three data scientist domain
    areas defined in the Climate and Agronomic Decision Sciences (CADS)
    organization (seeds, crop protection, and sustainability).
  • Conducts
    in depth literature reviews on related technologies that the CADS team
    will be responsible for developing.
  • Communicates
    results ranging from authoring technical white papers to high level
    business recommendations for decision makers.
  • Continuously
    improves the capabilities of the junior data scientists on the CADS team
    through mentoring and development.

  • Skills:

  • 10-15 years in developing
    algorithms in an applied research commercial setting.
  • PhD preferred MS
    required in a quantitative/computational science.
  • Experience in an applied
    research function within a commercial agriculture setting.
  • Ability to steer research
    process from conceptualization through product deliverable.
  • Solid experience in
    implementing state of the art machine learning/deep learning techniques in
    a fast paced environment.
  • Experience developing
    novel techniques involved surrounding the data acquisition/ETL process,
    pattern recognition, statistical analysis and applied research scalability.
  • Familiarity with working
    one or more of the following: weather, climate, soils, satellite or
    genomics datasets.
  • Experience in technical
    and social issues related to data ethics and data privacy
  • Competency in writing
    production ready code using the common suite of Data/Decision Science
    programming languages and tools Python, R, Scala, etc.
  • Comfortable handling
    large and disparate data sets data fusion experience preferred.
  • In addition to computer
    science, domain expertise in an area of the physical or quantitative
    sciences preferred but not required.
  • Experience with Computer
    Vision and Geospatial technologies preferred.
  • Ability to work well both
    independently and in group settings.
  • Ability to influence
    indirect relationships throughout the global business.
  • Successful stakeholder
    engagement across all management levels in the organization.
  • Preferred Requirements
    • Able to lead in complex matrix organization
      across different countries, businesses and cultures.
    • Minimum 5-7 years managing teams junior to mid-level
      data scientists.
    • Proven ability to demonstrate consistent leadership
