Quantitative Geneticists work to solve complex problems in agriculture by innovating in the adjacent spaces between genetics, genomics, data science and information technology. In this role, you will provide technical expertise towards the discovery and development of advanced analytics to support data driven decisions in our breeding programs. We are looking for a scientist who has experience in delivering innovation at scale by working collaboratively with members in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver precise, reproducible and automated solutions. This individuals work will require high intellectual rigor and sound engineering principles to deliver enabling technologies that will disrupt the status quo leading to continuous improvement to our breeding processes.

Accountabilities.

  • Provide technical expertise in the disciplines of quantitative and population genetics, genomics, and plant breeding

  • Ensure implementation of best practices for genomic prediction analysis and participate in the development of tools, protocols and methodologies to broadly disseminate this information and assist in the training of Syngenta staff as appropriate

  • Work to build next generation analytical capabilities for the characterization of germplasm, SNPs, haplotypes and/or other omics data and their interactions with environment and agricultural practices

  • Work to incorporate new technologies, platforms, methods and data layers into existing analytics capabilities

  • Build effective partnerships and fully participate as a member of multi-disciplinary project teams (Subject matter experts, Intellectual Property, licensing, markers, genomics, breeding, information technology etc.) to develop products and extract value from genetic information initiatives.


  • Skills:

    • PhD degree in Biology, Computational Biology, Genetics, Plant Breeding or related fields

    • Hands-on experience working with very large data sets in Perl, Linux, Unix or similar environment; experience with C/C++ is a plus. Technical knowledge of standard statistical computing languages R, Python, Julia etc.

    • Technical knowledge in the disciplines of quantitative and population genetics, genomics, statistics, analytics, knowledge in whole genome association, genomic prediction and other standard population and quantitative genetic analyses

    • Technical knowledge in analytics, modelling, simulation, and data science with understanding of analytics lifecycles and software quality assurance approaches

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to explain complex data to non-experts, are required

    • Individual must be authorized to work in the United States for Syngenta without work authorization sponsorship now or in the future

    • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position



    Preferred Qualifications:


    • Understanding of current trends and issues in agriculture R&D

    • Experience in Agile methodologies, including scrum
