Role purpose
Coordinate and lead all insect resistance management (IRM) activities in support of Syngentas insect-resistant traited products in NA. Understand and implement strategies and studies to enable Syngenta to meet and influence regulatory requirements for GM insect trait registrations and stewardship conditions of registration working with a cross-functional team. Lead the provision of resistance modelling and consulting IRM expertise to support global traits IRM activities.
Accountabilities
Drive the development of North American insecticidal trait resistance management strategies to meet regulatory, durability and stewardship requirements while ensuring a fit with crop business strategies to include integrated crop strategies Coordinate with Regulatory Affairs to establish best practices for meeting North American commmerical trait registration conditions and stewardship concerning IRM including, advocacy with regulatory agencies, development of required biology data, modelling considerations, development of a rapid response plan to reports of suspected insect resistance, and a mitigation plan to verified cases of insect resistance to Syngentas traits to include chemistry tactics. Coordinate the planning and estimation of resource needed to develop all required biology data in support of NA traits IRM, as part of the annual planning cycle. Drive the development,interpretation and communication of the required data, and lead any follow up activities necessary in response to the data collected. Keep the global traits IRM TM informed of resource needs and of any unexpected data or concerning trends Work within an IRM support team in service of traits IRM deliverables globally. Duties of this team to include: o Provide resistance modeling capability and expertise o Provide technical input on approaches to discovery of insecticidal trait leads with novel modes of action versus key pests. Provide advice on commercial construct design and lead event selection ensuring appropriate candidate events are promoted with desirable IRM attributes o Provide other expert IRM technical opinion and guidance as required on a consultative basis Analyze and respond to the current competitive IRM environment in NA to include forecasting future directions/trends for IRM plans and regulatory requirements. Keep the global traits IRM TM udpated on key developments and trends in NA In alignment with the global traits IRM TM, represent Syngenta on cross-industry bodies related to IRM (e.g IRAC biotech, ABSTC etc) Interact with university scientists, customer groups, governmental scientists and regulatory agencies to influence IRM regulations, promote good stewardship practices, and increase awareness of the IRM benefits from Syngentas trait and chemistry offerings, either independently or in collaboration with other companies Critical success factors & key challenges Team player with engaging and pro-active communication style Ability to manage transitional change including shifting organizational responsibilities from product biology to marketing and vice versa Ability to work in a highly matrixed environment - interact effectively and productively across functional, geographic and cultural boundaries Must be able to focus on key projects and prioritize accordingly Ability to maintain objectivity in the face of diversity Build successful working relationships with key partners, including PB colleagues, RA, crop teams, and assets & marketing organizations





Skills:


Critical knowledge
An in-depth knowledge of insect control traits and insecticide and their use. Ph.D. in entomology or closely related field is required Background and understanding of key aspects of insecticidal trait development, commercialization, regulation and stewardship Critical experience

5+ years of substantial experience in IRM trait biology including a deep understanding of assay development, resistance modeling, experimental design, and interactions with regulatory and other functional groups Working understanding/competence of processes and systems required for data capture, analysis and presentation Membership on teams demonstrating significant contributions and leadership Demonstrated accomplishments in the field with excellent public speaking effectiveness Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities

Ability to synthesize technical information from various sources to enable key insights to enhance Syngenta competitiveness Comfort with multi-tasking Strong project management skills supported by excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication Willingness and ability to influence internal and external stakeholders Ability to make sound decisions based on critical data analyses Opportunistic, customer focused can-do attitude Simplify the complex Critical leadership capabilities
