of our planet. To support that challenge, the Research and Development team is
currently seeking a Laboratory Automation Specialist in Slater, Iowa. As an
Automation Specialist, you will

help shape the future of agriculture by:

  • Leading
    local and global automation projects to create custom tools, instrumentation,
    and software solutions.
  • Support,
    maintain, and repair laboratory automation equipment in a high throughput
    laboratory environment (Examples: LGC Biosearch, Tecan, Biotek, SPEX CertiPrep,
    Thermo, Perkin Elmer, Agilent, SPT Labtech)
  • Provide
    training and advise end-users on proper use of laboratory automation systems
  • Analyze
    current laboratory processes looking for opportunities to improve efficiency,
    consistency and safety through use of automation
  • Responsible
    for project execution from conception through design, prototyping, validation
    and implementation
  • Build
    strong working relationships with scientists and end-users, to effectively
    participate and lead cross-functional project teams
  • Partner
    with team members, scientists and external vendors, both locally and
    internationally, to ensure appropriate service contracts and relationships are
    implemented and maintained for laboratory automation and supports services
  • Anticipate
    the needs of the production for new equipment, replacement equipment, parts
    stocks, and need for service contracts
  • Stay
    up to date with emerging areas for building capabilities and driving innovation
    within domain


  • Bachelor
    of Science in science or engineering field or equivalent experience in
    automation or laboratory or related field
  • 4+
    years pf experience troubleshooting and maintaining equipment that includes
    mechanical, electrical, and software
  • Working
    knowledge and experience troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and software
  • Strong
    project management, organizational, communication skills are required
  • Programming,
    scripting, and database experience
  • In-depth
    experience with Microsoft Windows, PC hardware, and TCP/IP networking
  • Individual must be authorized to work
    in the United States for Syngenta without work authorization sponsorship now or
    in the future
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for
    this position
Preferred Requirements
  • Strong
    team player with ability to work independently and as part of a global team
  • Familiarity
    with laboratory setting, molecular biology, genotyping, and PCR
  • Experience
    and passion for solving analytical and technical problems, demonstrate
    creative, proactive, out-of-box thinking
  • Exposure
    to LEAN, Kanban, SCRUM, continuous improvement programs, production
  • Machine
    design, Product development, SolidWorks modeling, 3D printing experience
  • PLC
    programming, motion control servos, PID, steppers, machine vision software packages
    and advanced barcode reading, a plus
  • C#,
    LabView, SQL databases, web programming
