About this Job:
Today, Syngenta Digital is a world leader in digital farming, with more than 130M acres of farmland connected across the world. Our commitment is to bring the world of computer and data science to agronomy around the world to help farmers and their advisors grow more, while using less. We are looking for a chief of digital agronomy to lead the identification, prioritization, research, and delivery of digital agronomic solutions for use within our digital toolsets. This will include defining farm/in-field experimental design and analysis, and the creation/delivery of planting/spraying/fertilizer prescriptions to support and meet the needs of agronomists and farmers. This is a very broad role leading a digital agronomy team consisting of agronomy experts in support of our seed, crop protection, biologicals product lines and overall crop production at the field level including soil health, nutrition, and sustainability aspects. The role will report to the Chief Digital Officer of Syngenta Group.
Define and execute the DA Digital Agronomy strategy through innovative and effective digitally enabled recommendation systems on a global scale by working with customers/internal stakeholders/R&D/data layers. Leads discovery, development, positioning, and communication of agronomic value creation from novel digital approaches to agronomy. Create and manage strategic digital agronomy roadmaps with a compelling vision and practical steps/proof points to guide the digital journey for input prescriptions and digital crop management. Acts as a catalyst to drive the principles of Digital Agronomic Value throughout the organization and with DA partners with tangible examples and best practice. Role model Syngenta’s new digital DNA i.e., values, ways of working, brand, case studies – act as an agent for change. Creates and drives a network into the internal organization R&D and Commercial for Digital Agriculture. Lead the Digital Agriculture agronomic elements of collaboration efforts with external companies and researchers. Work across business units and regions to provide the capability globally.
Able to motivate & lead the team working in digital agronomy projects for each business unit. Lead the agronomy identification and prioritization of projects and project elements as part of a digital cross functional leadership team. Evaluate results from models/data science processes in the context of business objectives and goals. Collaborate with data scientists to define data standards, clean, manipulate, structure, and analyze various large, agriculturally relevant datasets in support of your hypothesis and digital products. Connect with stakeholders and wider digital team to seek council, influence path forward and effectively collaborates to drive results. Develop and maintain a current view of emerging Digital and Precision Ag technology, data sources and potential partners. Develop and maintain network of DA collaborators within and outside the organization to influence digital agriculture stakeholders e.g., NIFA. Contribute to shaping the global and regional business strategies through digital approaches and provide input into the global digital strategy.
- M.S. or PhD in agronomy related discipline preferred. B.S. minimum with extensive digital and/or practical experience.
- Well networked with large number of agricultural stakeholders e.g., retailers, AgTech companies, crop consultants, academia.
- Identify and implement complex field performance trials and interpret/analyze results in a multi-functional team.
- Knowledgeable of today’s state-of-the-art digital farming e.g., FMS, Precision Ag, etc..
- Understands basic innovation frameworks for both physical products i.e., Seeds and Crop Protection stage plan and Digital products.
- Proven and confident in sales environment, practical experience working with farmers and industry partners.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, Traits & Abilities:
Strong Leadership and communication skills, able to work in a corporate environment. At least 7 years practical technical agronomic experience with qualifications. Strong digital comprehension focused on agronomy and data analytics with a proven understanding of modern digital development processes and mindset. Ideally holds a certification/membership from external agronomic body e.g., American Society of Agronomy. 4 years of experience in agricultural commercial experience ideally within Seeds R&D, Crop Protection R&D, and/or Field Agronomy supporting sales or Sales organization. Working across borders – functions, regions, countries, businesses Crop Protection & Seeds and companies Capable of interacting directly with growers and third-party agronomists in a sales context. Hands on experience of today’s digital solutions agriculture. Influencing internal and external stakeholders.
