We are currently seeking a Greenhouse Senior Scientist – Plant Biology, for the Research and Development Pipeline Technologies team located in Research Triangle Park, Durham, North Carolina. As a Greenhouse Senior Scientist, you will develop efficient and innovative processes and protocols for plant care, seed production, trait efficacy assessment and characterization in laboratories, growth facilities and field.
You will help meet the world’s most pressing needs by:
Independently designing and conducting experiments to generate research materials, technical reports and scientifically sound interpretations and recommendations Working in a function and project matrix environment to plan, coordinate and execute biological research with major field crops Contributing expertise and knowledge relevant to trait development and trait characterization
Interact with scientists and technical staff to coordinate and lead trait efficacy testing in growth facilities and field to support trait projects Develop innovative methodologies and improve existing process in trait efficacy assessment Lead or participate on project team and work streams in scientific research Maintain accurate experimental records according to company policies with outstanding attention to detail Protect novel findings through submission of invention disclosure Manage, supervise, and mentor other employees within the functional group Scout and apply pesticides for disease and pest control May have supervisory responsibilities and lead multi-disciplinary work streams and projects Work 40 hours per week during weekdays and weekend Perform all activities in accordance with the Syngenta Health, Safety, and Environmental Policy
Master’s degree or higher, in crop sciences or closely related field from an accredited university Prior experience working in GM/GE Genetically Modified/Genetically Engineered trait characterization trialing in field or greenhouse Excellent knowledge of plant biology, plant physiology, and agronomy Understanding of genetics, plant breeding and biotechnologies Knowledge of greenhouse equipment and operations Must be authorized to work for Syngenta in the United States without work authorization sponsorship
Prior experience working with greenhouse or field trials Experience working with a major field crop such as corn, soybean, or wheat Ability to identify plant diseases and pests Demonstrated ability and motivation to work independently and supervise junior team members Computer skills such as databases, environmental controls, and Microsoft Office Excellent record keeping skills and demonstrated attention to detail
