Purpose Breeding Trial Specialists (BTS) plan and execute on/offsite trialing activities for crops in conjunction with Breeding Project Leads. Successful delivery of the role will result in high quality trials and data to enable data-based product advancement decisions in conjunction with Sales and Marketing. BTS are the key technical contributors to the hybrid promotion from PLC5 to PLC6.0 focusing on the territory and on regional demand. BTS are critical contributors to plant breeding research efforts to develop, improve or deploy novel selection strategies, native traits, data analysis and visualization workflows, and phenotyping methods and capabilities.
Accountabilities Follow health, safety and environmental rules to ensure a safe workplace at all times with minimal impact to the environment Be a subject matter expert in her/his crop(s), demonstrating expert knowledge in the practical implementation of breeding strategies, seed production, trials, phenotyping protocols, traits and their prioritization, market and customer dynamics, and local market requirements. Manage on/off site trialing and deliver quality data to support native trait deployment and product advancement decision making Key technical contributor to pre-commercial transfer decisions with the variety performance and other technical considerations at Territory level in her/his crops. Support the Breeding Project Leads in making a year plan for assessment trials including budget (Trial plan) Organize and execute internal and external trials with Syngenta colleagues and external cooperators as necessary in her/his crops as planned and as described in trial protocol Negotiate contracts with growers for trials based on standard Syngenta agreement, with support from the legal department. Trial visits at critical steps of growing to execute or oversee sowing, planting, harvest, and evaluation to ensure the integrity of trial contents and data quality. Deliver all collected data via agreed formats within agreed deadlines. Organize and oversee data collection in the field with Syngenta or third party colleagues Mastery of databases such as SPIRIT, MINT and software such as Excel, Spotfire for data management and analyses. Prepare trials in MINT and SPIRIT. Protect and improve the freedom to operate and reputations of Syngenta, its cooperators and customers by acting with integrity, respecting others, and adhering to internal and external compliance rules Organize Product Advancement Tours (PAT) with Breeding Project Leads and Portfolio managers to present trials and new product candidates to introduce into the new product introduction pipeline. Maintain good contacts throughout the vegetable production chain with the objective to understand customer needs and practices, as well as market developments, and use this information to improve the trial network.

Critical experience required for the job: Experience in plant variety trialing preferably in vegetable crops Experience in data processing and assessment using statistical methods and IT tools Experience in agricultural technologies and applications Experience in working with the veg production chain Understanding of Vegetable market and crop specifications Profound understanding of agronomy and basic breeding principles Willingness to travel extensively during peak periods domestic Awareness of health, safety and environmental considerations in an agricultural environment Experience with working in international environment is a plus Experience in making public presentations is a plusCritical knowledge and education required for the job: Masters degree in Agricultural related field horticulture is a plus OR Bachelors degree with 3+ years industry or trialing experience Knowledge of plant genetics and breeding MSc in Plant Breeding & Genetics is a plus Knowledge about trial design and theory Fluency in the principles and practical application of statistical data analysis Exposure to contemporary phenotyping methods Fluency in Microsoft Office suite especially Excel Exposure to cloud file sharing platforms e.g. OneDrive, SharePoint Fluency in English both verbally and in writing
