Plant & Food Research is a New Zealand-based organisation conducting research that adds value to New Zealand’s horticulture and viticulture sectors. Our 950 staff, spread across 14 New Zealand locations, are proud of the way our science and commercialisation supports the production of top quality, sustainably-produced foods and high-value products that earn a premium in international markets.
With fertile soils and a warm, temperate climate, the Hawke’s Bay region is New Zealand’s leading producer of apples and home to one of our major regional horticultural research centres.
As a Scientist / Apple and Pear Breeder, you will join a dynamic and successful pipfruit and summerfruit breeding research team creating new apple and pear cultivars for the New Zealand and global fruit industries. Working alongside senior pipfruit breeders and industry partners as part of a succession plan, you’ll apply established fruit breeding and selection methodologies, and partner with our plant genomics team to develop and deploy marker-assisted and genomic selection technologies and other breeding tools to improve breeding effectiveness, efficiency and timeliness.
Ideally, you will hold a PhD or equivalent in horticultural science and/or plant breeding with proven experience in apple and/or pear breeding and/or commercial fruit tree horticulture. Your skills in quantitative genetics and marker-assisted selection will be complimented by a well developed knowledge of experimental design and statistical analyses, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively translate science into commercial outcomes. An interest in the sensory properties of apple and pear fruit would be beneficial.
