The Chemist reports directly to the Manager, Technical Services.
What you will do:
  • Supervise and provides direction to the Senior Lab Development Technicians within the Technical Services department
  • Conduct non-routine analyses and analyses on substances as part of research projects to evaluate chemical and physical properties
  • Perform diverse analytical and instrument testing utilizing official or approved methodologies appropriate for routine and non-routine samples
  • Play a lead role in the development and administration of the Laboratory Quality Control Program including analytical system evaluation using statistical control techniques and external/internal check sample programs
  • Lead ‘best in class’ behaviors with focus on food and animal food safety, quality assurance, and plant regulatory compliance
  • Monitor, support, and enforce all of Nutrien’s food safety processes and procedures--this includes FSMA compliance, FSSC22000, other certifications and customer specific standards as identified in supporting documentation
  • Evaluate and recommend purchase of new analytical equipment
  • Provide setup, method development, and implementation of new analytical equipment
  • Create, evaluate, and implement new analytical procedures
  • Stay abreast of developments in the industry and in the field of analytical chemistry through literature and meetings with counterparts in other organizations
  • Lead and act as a resource for quality teams
  • Plan, prioritize, and review the work of staff assigned to perform a variety of chemical, bacteriological, and biological analysis
  • Develop schedules and methods to accomplish assignments ensuring work is completed in a timely and efficient manner
  • Participate in evaluating the activities of staff, recommending improvements and modifications
  • Provide and coordinate staff training and works with employees to correct deficiencies
  • Compile, record, review, and manage laboratory data and records; ensures calculations are performed accurately
  • Develop methods and procedures for record-keeping and data retrieval
  • Assist with forecasting budget needs for lab equipment and inventory; monitors expenditures
  • Develop, review, and revise established laboratory’s standard operating procedures to ensure compliance with rules and regulations
  • Maintain proper laboratory inventory
  • Research and review new equipment and lab materials; prepares requests for necessary laboratory supplies and equipment
  • Prepare and maintain required laboratory records and reports
  • Build and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other employees and the public using principles of good customer service
What you will bring:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in biology, microbiology, chemistry, or a related field and 5 or more years' experience is required
  • Prior supervisory experience, is preferred
  • Five years of experience conducting a variety of tests in a physical, chemical, or biological laboratory
  • Ten (10) years of experience in analytical chemistry along with possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Laboratory Technician certification, is preferred
  • Strength and dexterity to work with analytical equipment in all areas of the Laboratory, including the satellite labs
