This position reports directly to the Manager, Technical Services.
Supervises a Chemist, four Shift Operators and twenty Shift Technicians. The Technical Services Laboratory Supervisor manages lab personnel operations within the laboratory setting. This incumbent ensures analytical and technical services are provided timely and accurately to company staff/clients. The Laboratory Supervisor manages lab priorities to ensure timeliness and quality of results and ensures staff compliance with all laboratory rules and regulations, including health and safety policies, to guarantee the highest quality of results. A person in this position establishes quality standards, supervises quality control, inspects staff work and adjusts lab policies and procedures, as needed. Incumbent keeps up-to-date on federal, state, industry or employer standards and investigates ways to improve procedures.
 
What you will do:
  • Demonstrate solid knowledge of Laboratory Procedures
  • Develop operating and capital budgets for the laboratory and maintains control of lab expenses
  • Supervise supply purchases and maintains inventory
  • Evaluate employee performance
  • Tests new and improved laboratory methods and procedures; prepares laboratory notes, charts, etc. and writes up results of examinations; keeps accurate daily records
  • Demonstrate ability to direct, coach, and train associates as well as plan, monitor and schedule work
  • Lead ‘best in class’ behaviors with focus on food safety, quality assurance, and plant regulatory compliance
  • Monitor, support and enforce Nutrien’s food safety and animal food safety processes and procedures--this includes applicable food safety standards, animal food safety standards, customer specific standards, and any additional standards Aurora products are certified against (i.e. Halal, Kosher, NSF, etc.)
  • Review analytical reports, analytical instruments performance, calibration standards and accuracy, and analytical procedures
  • Resolution of product shipment assays with corporate management and/or independent laboratories
  • Supervise day-to-day operational tasks within company laboratory and liaise with personnel, as required
  • Coordinate with relevant staff regarding technical support resources and operational requirements
  • Perform all tasks in line with standard operating procedures for the company laboratories, including Laboratory Manuals guidelines, to ensure laboratories meet Quality Assurance and Workplace Health and Safety requirements as well as organizational requirements and policies and procedures
  • Supervise lab work to ensure timely completion of service requests
  • Anticipate potential issues and helps staff to resolve in keeping with production schedule
  • Ensure Lab Technicians adhere to laboratory data management and policies and protocols
  • Ensure that staff is maintaining up to date laboratory operational records
  • Ensure that staff maintains an in-depth knowledge of products, technology, technological solutions and general business scope
  • Maintain and improve staff knowledge (i.e. documentation of lessons learned) to contribute towards improved treatment systems and progression of laboratory methods
  • Periodic inspection of facilities and equipment for safety and housekeeping standards
  • Consultation with operating department’s personnel to determine analytical requirements, to report or review analytical data, and to render opinions on operating changes
  • Oversee and facilitate audits. Ensures the Quality Assurance Plans, datasheets, Chemical Hygiene plans are updated and representative
  • Maintain and implement training programs for upgrading and documenting skills of subordinates
  • Provide leadership for formation of task teams and participate in team activities. Job functions require the strength and dexterity to personally inspect all areas of laboratory operation including satellite labs. Most job functions are carried out inside but intermittent outdoor work in all weather conditions may be required when conducting inspections                                                                         
  • Perform all duties necessary to meet food safety, animal food safety, Nutrien, and any additional regulatory requirements or standards as prioritized by Nutrien
  • Inform management of any food safety or quality issues or any processes which become non-compliant with specified requirements                                                                                                                   
  • Identify and record any problems relating to food safety and the quality of the ingredients, processes, quality system, or safety system
  • Control further processing or delivery of nonconforming product in terms of food safety and quality issues until the deficiency or unsatisfactory condition has been corrected
  • Ensure lab personnel are members of and actively involved in the plant’s Food Safety and Animal Food Safety teams
