The Soil Microbiologist is primarily a hands-on laboratory scientist who can integrate across disciplines. This role: Leads agronomy projects related to the effects of natural and synthetic soil amendments on soil microbiological function and associated impacts on soil fertility and crop growth; contributes to the safety and science output of a working soils laboratory which uses a wide variety of raw materials, including crop protection active ingredients, macro and micronutrients and a variety of biostimulants and other specialty inputs; interacts with product development teams and their leaders; and is accountable for tightly focused, world-class research which helps develop products with clearly demonstrated mechanisms which drive our company’s business growth. The position is primarily visible to other researchers, and also has considerable interaction with the business and other functions, including regulatory, field agronomy, and product development teams.
What you will do:
  • Draft formal project proposals which are peer reviewed by internal colleagues
  • Be fully responsible for hands-on research in the laboratory. Work side by side with shared technicians in our lab on site. Write protocols, implement research, analyze data, draw and share conclusions, and evaluate project success vs. project goals. All research is documented in formal reports
  • Modify existing soil microbiology SOPs for use in our lab, intended to help answer product development questions
  • Drive innovative solutions. Drive a balance between theoretical and empirical scientific approaches
  • Stay current with relevant professional / scientific societies. Read and share journal articles with colleagues. Lead and organize educational seminars & discussions on relevant topics
  • Foster scientific exchange & collaboration with other scientists in our group and across our company
  • Assume responsibility for certain analytical instruments and lab areas. Assigned areas will be exemplary in terms of safety and compliance
  • Take ownership for continuous improvement in the safety culture of self and colleagues
  • Lead and example of the company’s Behavioral Standards of Safety, Integrity, Inclusion, Performance, Community and Innovation
What you will bring:
  • PhD required, preferably in Soil Microbiology, Soil Ecology, or a related field; experience may be considered in lieu education
  • Minimum of 1 year of related experience in product development for nutritionals, crop protection or biostimulants required. Additional experience preferred
  • Self-motivation, assertiveness, initiative, and results orientation
  • Proficiency writing & reviewing research proposals, literature reviews, research protocols, analysis and interpretation of data and report writing
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and computer skills
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders in which you effectively listen well to others, and accept and provide constructive feedback, suggestions, and recognition as appropriate
  • Ability to think creatively and solve problems
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and drive results
