About the role.

As part of McCain's globally connected R&D team, the Process Technologist supports the development of delicious, planet-friendly foods by translating insights and new technologies into winning product and process solutions. This role brings a growth mindset, a passion for product stewardship, and a strong commitment to health and safety, food safety, quality, and innovation.

The Process Technologist sets up and supports processing trials in the laboratory and on the pilot line. The role works closely with trial leads, internal research teams, visiting business units, and other McCain customers to support new product innovation, process improvement, cost improvement, and technology testing for regional and global projects.

The role also helps maintain Pilot Facilities systems and documentation, including water sampling, HACCP records, safety procedures, SharePoint files, and accurate data collection and entry.

What you'll be doing.

  • Act as a safety leader by promoting the PPTC safety culture and supporting the Key Elements of Safety Program.
  • Set up processing trials by moving equipment into the required configuration and confirming it is sanitized, safe, and ready for use.
  • Support trial leads with laboratory- and pilot-scale experiments involving new or improved products, processes, and technologies.
  • Prepare potato products in laboratory-scale simulations of industrial production processes according to strict protocols.
  • Complete quality control checks for pilot-line samples and follow specifications outlined in trial protocols.
  • Maintain Pilot Facilities systems and records, including water sampling, HACCP documentation, SharePoint files, and accurate data entry.
  • Support packaging, line studies such as dryer loss and batter pick-up, the flume additive station, and batter mixing activities.
  • Maintain equipment, hygiene, sanitation, and housekeeping standards, and promptly report equipment issues to supervision.
  • Work closely with PPTC research teams, visiting business units, external parties, and other McCain customers.
  • Support Senior Technicians and complete other related pilot-line, laboratory, food safety, and hygiene duties as assigned.

What you'll need to be successful.

  • Five years of experience in potato processing.
  • Self-motivated, able to work with minimal supervision, and willing to show clear ownership of pilot and laboratory facilities.
  • Ability to lead others; leadership training is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with internal and external project owners.
  • Understanding of intellectual property and how to protect it.
  • Ability to respond calmly and responsibly to unexpected circumstances and adapt to changing day-to-day operations.
  • One year of experience in quality control or quality assurance of potato products is considered an asset.
  • An interest in research and innovation, with excellent data collection and reporting skills.
  • Solid computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to understand and follow HACCP regulations related to sanitation and critical control points.
  • Understanding of facility services, including steam, air, and water, and how they are managed.
  • Clear understanding of waste streams and the importance of proper waste management.
  • Willingness to work varied shifts, support PSTs, and travel when required.
