How do today's students perceive the outlook for agricultural careers?

Perceptions of Agricultural Careers:  Defining Today’s Agricultural Graduate – When AgCareers.com surveyed agriculture students, 65% said they are confident or extremely confident that they would receive a job within one year of graduation.  Students’ biggest influencers were clubs and organizations, followed by parents or guardians, and then school classes.  The full AgCareers.com Enrollment & Employment Outlook:  Planning for Emerging Careers 2013 Update gauges the awareness, availability, and perceptions of graduates and careers within agriculture, food and natural resources.

What they envision:  56% said diverse career opportunities; 52% said rewarding career opportunities.  What their friends envision:  44% said hard work and little pay; 39% said little education needed.  How they look for jobs:  33% said career services or career fairs.  23% said internet job boards; 20% said family and friends.  Their confidence level:  65% said they are confident or extremely confident that they would receive a job within 1 year of graduation; 59% said they are confident or extremely confident that their peers in Ag majors would receive a job within 1 year or graduation; only 30% said they are confident or extremely confident their peers in majors other than Ag would find a job within 1 year of graduation.  Where they will go:  86% said they are willing to relocate INSIDE their home state; 26% look for this in their first job; 33% as long as they can move closer to home in a few years.  71% said they are willing to relocate OUTSIDE their home state; 17% look for this in their first job; 29% as long as they can move closer to home in a few years; 25% said relocation is not a factor in 1st job choice.
